POPSMosaic Jellyfish Swimming in the Coral Sea This is an image of a mosaic jellyfish. The shot was taken in the Coral Sea, 100 nautical miles off Cairns, Australia. The other images in the clip are mosaics to visualize a jellyfish. Melissa Fiene has more "Underwater" images on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/33332218@N05/sets/72157611273467024/

POPSMosaics, mosaics, mosaics... I've got a bit of a thing about mosaics and have done a few clips on the subject before. This site is just packed with amazing stuff and is a must see. I've clipped a few of the more unusual items (catflaps, would you believe?) But the site is well worth a visit.

POPSThe Broth (and why colors matter) The Broth is a real-time, collaborative, online art space where everyone uses their mouse to click and drag the exact same colored tiles to form whatever the collective consensus agrees upon at that moment. Aside from marveling at the impressive AJAX engineering feat required to pull it off, just watching the tiles flying around by hidden hands is mesmerizing. I also thought their article about how palette choice affects artistic results was interesting and clipped it below the gallery images. Check out the rest of the site for a guided tour through the code that makes it all work.

POPSCult of the Wolf: An Ancient Roman Cave Shrine Archaeologists have finally discovered the lost Lupercal underneath the ruins of the Emperor Augustine's palace. It was the underground shrine to the she-wolf who raised the legendary fratricidal twins who founded Rome, Romulus and Remus. Somehow my job suddenly seems very boring. But I do like that Italy's Minister of Culture, Mr. Rutelli, appears to believe this is historical validation of the Myth of Romulus. After all, if there's an ancient temple there that must prove the myth to be true in its entirety. (Hey, it worked when they found "Troy," right?) Welcome to the Evans-Schliemann School of Hokey Historiography and Wistful Thinking.

POPSAncient Tiles Reveal Complex Geometry This isn't run-of-the-mill geometry. Quasi-crystals are made by fitting together a set of shapes, including five- and 10-sided shapes, into patterns that, unlike typical tile floors, don't repeat.

POPSFabulous Custom Chandeliers Anyone can have a light fixture--but it is certainly more impressive to have a custom chandelier! Rock & Royal, which debuted at the Millionaire Fair in Cannes last year, creates chandeliers and "photorealist mosaics" for the masses. I'd have one (or ten!) made to accent an affluent client event, for them to keep afterwards--then every time my client looked at their new piece, they'd think of me!
