POPSMajor biological discovery…inside the Chernobyl reactor "That is to say, the melanin molecule gets struck by a gamma ray and its chemistry is altered. This is an amazing discovery, no one had even suspected that something like this was possible. Aside from its novelty value, this discovery leads to some interesting speculation and potential research. Humans have melanin molecules in their skin cells, does this mean that humans are getting some of their energy from radiation? This also implies there could be organisms living in space where ionizing radiation is plentiful."

POPSSkin cancer risk factors: # of moles more important than sun exposure? *sigh* I thought this would be useful news for anybody else who's in the "I wouldn't need makeup to play a title role in a live-action version of 101 Dalmatians " club. (Sometimes I think it's not really that I'm pale – I probably have a normal amount of melanin, it's just all concentrated into moles. Bah.)

POPS10 Things You Didn't Know About You continued... 3. Big Brains Cause Cramped Mouths - as our brains grew our jawbone structure changed, leaving us with expensively overcrowded mouths. 2. The World Laughs with You - evidence suggests that laughter is a social cue for mimicry. Mimicry plays an important role in social interaction 1. Your Skin Has Four Colors - All skin, without coloring, would appear creamy white. Near-surface blood vessels add a blush of red. A yellow pigment also tints the canvas. Lastly, sepia-toned melanin, created in response to ultraviolet rays, appears black in large amounts. These four hues mix in different proportions to create the skin colors of all the peoples of Earth.

POPSPeople Change Color Don't let the KKK find out about this. This is more evidence that we are all one and racial superiority is bunk.

POPSUCI researchers find new way to fight cocaine addiction Could be good news for those smokers who have tried everything else. Some scientists say it is at least as hard to kick tobacco for some ( maybe they have the same problem) Quote - Did you say you were addicted or a dickhead? Year 6 student

POPSLife after Chernobyl - fungi fed on radiation This also raises the possibility that animals and plants could evolve a melanin molecule efficient at protecting against a range of environmental stresses that involve cell damage, including that of solar UV radiation, the precursor to skin cancer.
