POPSReality Lord of the Flies Drop a bunch of kids in an abandoned town and see if they get crazy enough to make some must-see TV. Yes, it's exploitative and a frightening snapshot of our voyeuristic society, but how can you not watch this?

POPSMississippi School Students Told Not To Say Obama's Name “As adults and professionals we are not going to deprive anyone of their excitement over the current election of President-elect Obama, or any other candidate,” Ladner said. “The whole nation was excited, and in no way and at no time will children be disciplined for saying the name of the president-elect of the United States. Any employee who would attempt to do that would be corrected and disciplined. We expect professional behavior, respect and demeanor of staff and students. It is unfortunate that some employees mishandled this situation but they have been disciplined and I have spent the day clarifying our policies." Pearl's school superintendent said no child will be punished for saying Obama, Barack Obama or President Obama. Ladner said this is a part of our history now, and students will learn it.

POPSWhat do teachers make?
I make them apologize and mean it. I make them have Respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. Keyboarding isn't everything. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in math. They use their God given brain, not the man-made calculator. I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know about English while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand, placing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, One Nation Under God, because we live in the United States of America. Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life. (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) 'Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn't everything, I can hold

POPSDespising Oral Sex More Than Torture "We were a nation inspired by thought and words. Patrick Henry, "Give me liberty or give me death." Dr. King, "I have a dream." The hymns of the heart like, "We Shall Overcome." Suddenly we say "Give me less liberty so I don't worry about death." Standing on the mountaintop, we exclaim, "I have no dream." Overwhelmed by paranoia and despair, we lament, "We cannot overcome."

POPSDisposable Truths of the Wounded Warrior Do YOU support the troops? Are you going to give a hand to the returning neighbour who needs it, or hold the hand of one of the wounded in hospital, or mentor a fatherless kid? How about next year? Or 5 years from now? Will you still be supporting the troops then? These people are paying the ultimate price, we have no idea. We owe it to them to NOT to forget them, in their hour of need. Regardless of disability benefits and what have you, everyone can do their share to truly support the troops and that means, also when they get home. (.... and I don't mean by just waving flags and reciting patriotic mantras all the time. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. *LOL*)

POPSWhy The Hostility Towards Differences? "What to make of the girl who wears basketball shorts and baggy T's and enjoys shooting baskets with the boys; the black kid who hangs out with a white punk rock crowd; the artsy boy who "glams it up" at school in high heels and jewelry? His skin, his smile, his heart . . . it's the same as anyone else," Shakina pointed out. "It's blue eye shadow, that's all it is. What about that is so threatening?" As someone who felt they were made to "fit in" with the rest of societies "ideas" of how one is supposed to feel, I can totally relate to this article. I've asked myself so many times why there is so much hostility towards differences and I can never come up with a good answer. So growing up, I tried to fit in outwardly while secretly living quite a different lifestyle. The ironic part is that I found some of the most homophobic people to actually harbor gay tendencies themselves.

POPSCBS Was Warned on ‘Kid Nation,’ Documents Show "...a state labor inspector was turned away from the site..." Who else could turn a state inspector away? This show is an experiment. I don't know if I'll watch it, but something about it is compelling. I can't help but wonder how the kids worked things out, so that's the pull for me. What do you think?

POPSCan't Eat Your Cake And Have It Too Sucka "If we're so racist, then why would I have them come into my home?" he asked. The Campbells' other two children also have unusual names: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell turns 2 in a few months and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell will be 1 in April. POPSMemo To Palin: Fruit Fly Research Led To Advances In Autism Palin did not specify what fruit fly research earmark she was referring to (presumably a grant for olive fruit fly research), but she is apparently unaware that scientific research with fruit flies has led to valuable discoveries that have boosted autism research, as a study at the University of North Carolina demonstrated last year: cientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine have shown that a protein called neurexin is required for..nerve cell connections to form and function correctly. The discovery, made in Drosophila fruit flies may lead to advances in understanding autism spectrum disorders, as recently, human neurexins have been identified as a genetic risk factor for autism. The study of fruit flies has also been used for other autism research and “revolutionize ” the study of birth defects.

POPSCould Texas’ Gingrish-based High School History Curriculum Go National? Okay parents, you want to worry about a politician brainwashing your kid? This is where we need to fight back. Why should the rest of the country worry about what textbooks are use din Texas? Because Texas is one of the two states with the largest student enrollments, along with California. "The publishers vie to get their books adopted for them, and the changes that are inserted to please Texas and California are then part of the textbooks made available to every other state," says Diane Ravitch, professor of education at NYU, who wrote a book about the politics of textbooks.

POPSHasbro toy recall after 2 deaths- a talkin' tool bench as a parent, i can't think of a scarier thought-- it's not enough to trust the recommended age listings on toys anymore. You are much better off using it as a loose guildline, but to personally evaluate the toys and pieces before allowing your children to play.= both boys that died from using this toy were under the recommended age.

POPSparents beware Need to stop Mexican drug trade. It is a war we have to win to protect our children and society as a whole. As important as terrorism to win. A kid becomes an heroin addict for the rest of his life if he survives.

POPSHappy (belated) 95th birthday to Jack LaLanne! More: The seeming futility of shaping up the world does not daunt him. "I never think about that," LaLanne says. "I think about things that I can improve." One thing he can always improve is himself. LaLanne works out two hours a day, mostly swimming and lifting weights… "I work at living," he says, leaning close and squeezing an arm. "Most people work at dying. Dying's easy." One of LaLanne's most effective sales devices has been his amazing feats of strength. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America in 1968 and became an instant sensation on the Southern California muscle scene, LaLanne challenged the kid to a duel at Muscle Beach. The Austrian Oak was 21; the Oakland Oak was 54. "I beat him in chin-ups and push-ups," LaLanne says. "He said, 'That Jack LaLanne's an animal! I was sore for four days. I couldn't lift my arms!' " At age 70, handcuffed, LaLanne towed 70 loaded boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor.

POPSKids in More Trouble As the saga continues for Kid Nation, one thing is certain: CBS, the high ratings, low buzz network, is garenering the watercooler chatter it set out for. But all of it begs the question: is all buzz really good buzz? Media Buyers seem to say so. Their argument: ethics aside, buzz -- good, bad or otherwise -- brings viewers. We'll see on Sept. 19th (the premiere), assuming the conservative net doesn't pull the show before that.
