    Human-frog hybrids reveal autism's secrets
    Mohir
    by Mohir  7-22-2008    2
To see if abnormalities in neurotransmitter signalling also underlie autism, Miledi's team collected brain samples from six deceased autistic patients, aged eight to 39. They fused brain-cell membranes, which house neurotransmitter receptors, together with Xenopus egg membranes. As a control, they did the same thing with brain cells from patients with no history of mental disorder. Miledi's team then doused the frog eggs in neurotransmitter chemicals, and measured the voltage generated within each egg. The neurotransmitter chemicals tell brain cells to pump charged molecules in and out the membrane, creating a voltage across the membrane. Since Xenopus eggs do not respond to the neurotransmitters, the human proteins are completely responsible for any electric current generated. Four of six autistic brains responded to neurotransmitters chemicals less vigorously than the controls.

Very interesting vision. Aggasi’s plan to electrify the private transportation system is nothing short of ingenious. It is a win-win game for governments, car owners, for the environment, for the economy and for Aggasi’s company. True many details must be worked out properly for such a deep change to take place. But it seems entirely within reach. Read the rest here

The market for plug-in cars is fast approaching
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  7-21-2008    7
Very exciting stuff. This is no longer the talk of what's ifs and hypotheticals...it's reality and it's coming soon. In my opinion, the introduction of plug-in cars will be a major catalyst for the development of additional sources of energy - including more wind and solar generated. It will also be the tipping point for allocating the massive resources needed to upgrade our nation's power grid.

Born in 1950, Gebisa Ejeta grew up in a one-room thatched hut with a mud floor, in a rural village in west-central Ethiopia. Walking 20 kilometers every Sunday night to attend school during the week Ejeta’s high academic standing earned him financial assistance and entrance to the secondary-level Jimma Agricultural and Technical School, which had been established by Oklahoma State University under the U.S. government’s Point Four Program. After graduating with distinction, Ejeta entered Alemaya College (also established by OSU and supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development) in eastern Ethiopia. He received his bachelor’s degree in plant science in 1973. In 1973, his college mentor introduced Ejeta to a renowned sorghum researcher, Dr. John Axtell of Purdue University, who invited him to assist in collecting sorghum species from around the country Ejeta entered Purdue in 1974, earning his Ph.D. in plant breeding and genetics.      I sure hope they can pull this off. The introduction of a rechargeable electric car has the potential to be a game changer for our economy and global dynamics. I would imagine that the response to this in the market would dwarf that received thus far by hybrids. We are talking about truly revolutionizing one of the most important industries in the world. And don't forget the ripple effect this will have by creating the need to make enormous investments in our national electricity grid.

" They found that 49 of the 105 captive tigers, or about 47 percent, could be categorized as being of one of five subspecies. Since some of the 49 were from breeding programs, the researchers suggest that the percentage of purebreds in the full captive population is probably lower, about 14 percent to 23 percent. Still, that represents a new pool of genetically distinct tigers potentially available for breeding efforts. " new pool ! great news :)

To produce the 21.72 kilowatt hours with coal to power Tesla's Roadster, 47.4 pounds of carbon dioxide would be emitted. When the same amount of electricity is made with natural gas, 23.5 pounds of carbon dioxide are emitted. Natural gas is the second most used fuel for electric power in the U.S. according to the Energy Information Administration. Coal is first, with 48.5 percent of the total in 2007.

The Future: The Hybrid with a Better Twist
    DanaGarrett
    by DanaGarrett  7-1-2008    1
It's this kind of technology America needs to turn to on a massive productive scale and perhaps even partly subsidize the production to help keep the costs down for consumers. That would put people to work in good paying jobs, greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and we can tell McCain & Bush that we don't need more offshore oil just offshore wind power so we can charge our cars up at night.

Cheap hybrids - hopefully will prove a catalyst for mass adoption
    egoldstein
    by egoldstein  4-22-2006    1
One of theinteresting things i've read recently regarding the slower adoption of hybrids lately is that they don't look "different" enough from the traditional models. In other words, people want to be known for driving hybrids...that it is a statement as much as a cost savings. By making it look too similar, people loose that factor. I totally think that makes a lot of sense, and if i were designing hybrid vehicles i'd make them look totally futuristic so that people constantly hear "oh, you drive a hybrid, cool."
