POPSReality Lord of the Flies Drop a bunch of kids in an abandoned town and see if they get crazy enough to make some must-see TV. Yes, it's exploitative and a frightening snapshot of our voyeuristic society, but how can you not watch this?

POPSU.S. Ranked 36th Freest Press in the World
Who Controls the U.S. Media? For the most part, the media spreads a lot of misinformation and corporate propaganda. This is not at all surprising considering that Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, Viacom (formerly CBS) and General Electric's NBC are the top owners of the entire media industry, which includes everything you read and hear in newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. In the last 15 years alone, your sources for news have shrunk drastically. Whereas in 1983, 50 corporations ruled the U.S. news media, by 2004 this number decreased to a minuscule six corporations! As you might imagine, with just six corporations deciding what’s worthy of news and what’s not, you end up with sensationalized tragedies, celebrity features, and anything else that will capture people’s attention. There is virtually no competition in the media market today whatsoever, and this s

POPSLiar? RAPED Female officer Treated 'Like A Criminal' by Army.
(CBS) Few problems have been more persistent or produced more bad news for the military than the issue of rape within its own ranks. Allegations that not enough is being done to help victims or prosecute offenders have been raised from the service academies to the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan -- where hundreds of cases of sexual assault have been reported by women in uniform. It was that revelation, plus pressure from Congress, that’s forced the Pentagon to once again examine sexual misconduct in the military – which has been done 18 times in the last 16 years. The result has been more recommendations and sweeping policy changes. "They’ve done nothing but lie to me and treat me like a criminal," says Dyer. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld says that he will have zero tolerance when it comes to sexual assault in the military. To that, Dyer says, "I don’t believe it. Zero tolerance would mean that I would not have been treated the way I’ve been treated."

POPSLetters Reveal Mother Teresa's Secret "What do I labor for?" she asked in one letter. "If there be no God, there can be no soul. If there be no soul then, Jesus, You also are not true." "These are letters that were kept in the archbishop's house," the Rev. Brian Kolodiejchuk told Phillips. The letters were gathered by Rev. Kolodiejchuk, the priest who's making the case to the Vatican for Mother Teresa's proposed sainthood. He said her obvious spiritual torment actually helps her case. "Now we have this new understanding, this new window into her interior life, and for me this seems to be the most heroic," said Rev. Kolodiejchuk. According to her letters, Mother Teresa died with her doubts. She had even stopped praying, she once said. The church decided to keep her letters, even though one of her dying wishes was that they be destroyed. Perhaps now we know why.

POPSGOP Consultant Killed in Plane Crash was Warned of Sabotage Connell was ordered to testify in the suit in October, and told a federal court that he had no involvement and knew of no plan to switch votes in Ohio in 2004. "He has flown his private plane for years without incident," Alexandrovna wrote. "I know he was going to DC last night, but I don't know why. He apparently ran out of gas, something I find hard to believe. I am not saying that this was a hit nor am I resigned to this being simply an accident either. I am no expert on aviation and cannot provide an opinion on the matter. What I am saying, however, is that given the context, this event needs to be examined carefully." ----- Connell had recently said he was afraid George Bush and Dick Cheney would "throw under the bus." Cliff Arnebeck had also previously alerted Attorney General Michael Mukasey to alleged threats from Karl Rove to Connell if he refused to "take the fall." http://www.alternet.org/rights/114674/

POPSU.S. History of Using Torture a very decent & extensive article on the US history on torture from Professor McCoy, the author of "A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror". If this law stands, with its provisions for torture and drumhead justice, then the United States will suffer continuing damage to its moral leadership in the international community. Looking through a glass darkly into the future, Washington may try to return to that convenient contradiction that marked US policy during the Cold War: public compliance with human rights treaties and secret torture in contravention of those same diplomatic conventions. Yet the world is no longer blind to these once-clandestine CIA methods and this attempt at secrecy will likely produce another scandal similar to Abu Ghraib. But next time our protestations of innocence will ring hollow and the damage to US prestige will be even greater.

POPSAsleep At The Power Plant Guards asleep at nuclear power plants. Wow. Doesn't that just make you feel SO safe? :) ...that hasn't affected the company's ability to get hundreds of millions of your tax dollars to protect some of the most sensitive government sites in the nation. That includes a $549 million contract to guard the federal Y-12 complex - a prime target for terrorists because it stores tons of highly-enriched uranium.

POPSSarah Palin is a Bitch… there I said it. "Please take your ridiculous hair, your over lipstick-smacking mouth, your Lenscrafter look smarter glasses and your poorly fitted designer jackets back to Alaska. And when you get there, shove a piece of the pipeline up your considerable ass. I’ll be damned if we’ll put our children’s future in your hands. And the same thing goes for McCain - the ass wipe who gave her this national platform effectively pushing the woman’s movement back into the dark ages - knowing McCain that might have been his plan all along." Love it!

POPSDelta Force officer: US officials stopped plans to kill bin Laden This is the 2nd guy I have heard claim this. The other was a CIA operative who spoke at an event and also has a book. The stories are pretty similar. I guess Bush and crew figured without a bad guy to chase, the war would be short, so let Bin Laden out there so we can expand the war. One reason why I could never take orders - if I had the bad guy in sight - I would take em out!

POPSThe Age Of Megafires "You know, there are a lot of people who don't believe in climate change," Pelley remarks. "You won't find them on the fire line in the American West anymore," Tom Boatner says. "'Cause we've had climate change beat into us over the last ten or fifteen years. We know what we’re seeing, and we're dealing with a period of climate, in terms of temperature and humidity and drought that's different than anything people have seen in our lifetimes." They need some of our angry, know it all, bring on Armageddon clippers to set them straight.

POPSWelcome To The Machine To date, every major commercial TV network has failed to report this story, covering up their complicity and keeping the existence of this scandal from their audiences. More than two weeks after the New York Times reported on the Penatgon's military analyst program to sell controversial policies such as the invasion of Iraq, the broadcast television news outlets implicated in the program are hoping to tough out the scandal by refusing to report it. Recently Media Matters of America (MMA) reported that, according to a search of the Nexis database, "the three major broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, and NBC -- have still not mentioned the report at all." Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro and three dozen colleagues have sent a letter to the Department of Defense Inspector General calling for an investigation of this "propaganda campaign aimed at deliberately misleading the American public."

POPSUS intelligence Reports: Iraq War fuels global terror threat. At the end of the article the author reports, "McCain told CBS that the United States needs to prevail in Iraq, saying that failure in that country would only further complicate problems." In this instance, I agree. If we quit now I have little doubt that neighboring countries would openly and/or covertly vie for Iraqi controlled soil. The region is too resource rich to go uncontested. I just wish we had had the foresight to realize that invading Iraq would leave the United States militarily over-committed. Right now the President can’t outright threaten Iran or its nuclear program, because we don’t have the military might to oppose them. And what’s worse Iran knows it. In effect we’ve diminished our place at the bargaining table, because our military is stretched so thin that we could barely muster an effective counter-attack even in a worst-case scenario – like North Korea launching an ICBM.
