POPSWhat Cats Know About War Read the rest at the source. In a place where we could do little else... the tally became a measure of one small thing we could do to favour life over death. Animals are often forgotten victims of war and disasters. Hats off to all who will spare a thought for the poor animals who get caught up in the miseries of mankind too. Good luck Scooter and family! .:)

POPSShould Chimpanzees Be Given Human Rights? This case promises to be very interesting! If a chimpanzee can be declared a person, then there's nothing in the way of a person becoming an ape--and I'm not just talking about a retroactive status applied to ex-husbands. In fact, I predict a surge in trans-specied people, who will eagerly go over to the side of the chimps. This bit is just BEGGING for me to make a GWB joke...but I won't. .:D

POPSChickens Are People Too! *LOL* I've had lots of pet chickens. My last one, Molly was a fiery little "Red Dwarf" with an awesome attitude! She was queen of the roost even over all the cats. Aah, I loved that funny hen. *LOL* Anyway! I'm not a vegan. I believe chickens are "meant" to be eaten by us, just as we one day will be food for others, be it worms or Azaleas. (or White Pointers, if you're an Aussie. Ha ha!) The point is respect. Treat animals with dignity and respect and be thankful for the nourishment they provide. We're all just part of the food chain. Don't waste or squander, but be thankful for the food you are lucky to have. (Not all are as lucky as us, to be able to eat every day.) Check out all the cool comments from fellow clippers on the clip about plants having feelings , for some really cool thoughts on consciousness and awareness and interconnectedness. Mind-expanding! Molly died of old age, by the way...

POPSSorry Again I don't like any kind of discrimination. Pitbulls, rottweilers etc are not the problem, humans are. If you can stomach it, watch this video. Beware! Graphic images, but WATCH it anyway! Do not turn away from what goes on and the suffering millions of animals must endure every day. Day after day after day. Who is the real killer? Working in animal welfare, I have seen such horrific cruelty from the hand of man, that it simply defies description. I can guarantee you, that the real and overwhelming problem we face is not some breed, but mankind's vicious and brutal treatment of our fellow creatures on this earth, including each other. "Punish the deed, not the breed." Please help fight and punish the real killer....and it is not the dogs! "The greatness of a nation and it's moral progress can be judged by the way it treats it's animals." -- Mahatma Gandhi

POPSGene Mutation Linked To Cognition I worry what the Chinese are going to use this data for. Are they going to argue, that their horrific treatment of so many animals is "okay" because animals are too dumb to know or feel what's happening to them?

POPSAnimals can tell right from wrong This thinking is another indicator of a change in human assumptions about animal consciousness -- from uncaring reductionism to reflective respect. This is not new. In 1966, Conrad Lorenz made much the same point in On Agression, but noted that humans are the only animals whose moral principles against violence are so often breached in the form of murder and war.

POPS'Yappy Ending' for Puppy Flushed Down Toilet The dog -- which has been named Dyno after the plumbing firm which rescued it -- is now safe and well and back with the family. Daniel has apologised, blaming his twin brother for getting the dog dirty and saying: "I had to give him a wash. I'm so, so sorry. I won't do it again."

POPSBeing An Animal Rescue Worker "I cannot believe that the purpose of life is (merely) to be happy. I think the purpose of life is to be useful, to be honourable, to be compassionate. I think it is above all to matter, to count, to stand for something. To have it make some difference that you lived at all." - Leo Rosten "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion." - The Dalai Lama

POPSAn Interview With Jesus Christ The message is, there's lots of good news out there as well and we can all help create it, if we want to.. :) Clip poll: Have you ever been in the news or been on TV for something good? (or if for bad, pray tell! *LOL*) I've been on the six o'clock news once (an animal welfare related issue), for a whole 18 seconds and I know we have a delightful boob beer can crushing clipper among our CM rank and file too. EG's interviews count too, I reckon. Has anyone else ever been "famous" and had their five minutes of fame? (or 18 seconds?) *LOL* Clip song.

POPSMonsanto's Udder Disgrace The milk labeling controversy - and other corporate practices of Monsanto - have been issues for years. For a while every time I saw my Senator, I would greet him with the same comment, "Hey Bernie, when are you going to do something about Monsanto?" Senator Bernie would shake his head and raise his hands in frustration. I often heard him say that no matter how bad you think things are in Washington, they are really much worse. While the Congress is distracted with growth hormones taken by sports figures, our farm animals are being abused with other hormones. Baseball players have a free choice. Cows don't. None of us have a choice. Not if Monsanto has anything to say about it and they do. Money talks.

POPSDomestic Animals Skinned Alive "It's cheaper to make these things from cat and dog than it is to make synthetic fur," Campaigners estimate that over two million dogs and cats are killed for their fur in China every year. China also farms animals such as mink for their fur and makes over half of the world's fur products.

POPSChange We Can Believe In At last it came time to bake the bread. 'Who will help me bake the bread?', asked the little red hen. 'That would be overtime for me' said the cow. 'I'd lose my welfare benefits,' said the duck. 'I'm a dropout and never learned how,' said the pig. 'If I'm to be the only helper, that's discrimination, ' said the goose. 'Then I will do it by myself,' said the little red hen. She baked five loaves and held them up for all of her neighbors to see. They wanted some and in fact, demanded a share. But the little red hen said, 'No, I shall eat all five loaves.' 'Excess profits!' cried the cow. (Nancy Pelosi) 'Capitalist leech!' screamed the duck. (Barbara Boxer) 'I demand equal rights!' yelled the goose. (Jesse Jackson) The pig just grunted in disdain. (Ted Kennedy)

POPS Cruelty-to-Elephants Case Heads to Trial
Ringling Bros. and its parent company, Feld Entertainment, have defended themselves aggressively since the suit was filed in 2000, contending their treatment of all circus animals is state-of-the-art. The plaintiffs have asserted that Ringling Bros.' own train records show the elephants are chained in railroad boxcars for an average of more than 26 straight hours, and often 60 to 70 hours at a time, when the circus travels. The circus also defends the use of bullhooks, saying the sharp tools have been used for centuries in Asia to control elephants humanely. Activists say the implements — which resemble long fire pokers — often inflict wounds that leave scars. Michelle Pardo, a lawyer for Feld Entertainment, said the defense will prove that the elephants "are healthy, alert, and thriving." In addition to four animal welfare groups, the plaintiffs include Tom Rider, a former Ringling Bros. employee who alleges that he witnessed abuse of the elephants on numerous occasions.
