POPSBest Documentary EVER: Never shown in USA !!! Amnesty International has publicly confirmed that a fear of violence directed at their staff forced the organisation to withdraw 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' from their recent film festival in Vancouver, Canada. In an article in the Guardian newspaper (http://www.guardian.co.uk/venezuela/story/0,12716,1090788,00.html), an Amnesty spokesman said the organisation had been forced to pull the film after staff at their Venezuelan office expressed fears for their safety if the film was screened. Prior to this, Amnesty has received a series of representations alleging that the film had distorted key events. These representations were rejected. The film was only pulled after the safety fears were raised. The Guardian confirmed that the campaign to halt screenings of the film is connected to opponents of the Venezuelan government.

POPSThe Nativists are Restless It is easy to mock white-supremacist views as pathetic and to assume that nativism in the age of Obama is on the way out. The country has, of course, made considerable progress since the days of Know-Nothings and the Klan. But racism has a nasty habit of never going away, no matter how much we may want it to, and thus the perpetual need for vigilance.

POPSHolloween in Dublin. Today... Gays, drink, money, Amnesty. NO religion!
When I saw this photo in the Irish Times of the fun in Temple Bar, Dublin, it was the first time that I knew of the event. Temple Bar was the oldest part of Dublin and has been completely restored. Yet an old fella like me would have stood out with all the young people who flock there. I'm reminded of great Irish traditions that went to America and are now returned, repackaged and better and in some cases even better than left your shores. We've commented here on ChipMarks about Halloween and pumpkins. Well the biggest of all is St.Patrick's Day. That now is celebrated throughout the world, Russia, China, you name it. I'm not sure but I think you invented it. A decade or so ago it was a pitiful affair. Now it would rival any similar event in the World and now not just in Dublin. Spilling out from this are numerous other events throughout the year. That photo gives you an idea of the standard. At times you would think you were in South America. I'm guessing but I think quite a few

POPSStoning victim "begged for mercy" The witness said people crowding round to see the execution said it was "awful". "People were saying this was not good for Sharia law, this was not good for human rights, this was not good for anything." But no-one tried to stop the Islamist officials, who were armed, the witness said. He said one boy was shot in the confusion. According to Amnesty International, nurses were sent to check during the stoning whether the victim was still alive. They removed her from the ground and declared that she was, before she was replaced so the stoning could continue.

POPSsexual violence as "a tactic of war to humiliate, dominate, instil fear in & disperse"
Amnesty International says women and girls are being targeted in conflicts around the world while the authorities do little or nothing to prevent it. In a report called Lives Blown Apart, the organisation says these crimes persist because those who commit them know prosecutions are rare. Despite promises, treaties and legal mechanisms, governments have failed to protect women and girls, Amnesty says. The human rights group says its investigations have found that violence against women is not just a by-product of war, but often a deliberate military strategy, with women particularly targeted in ethnic cleansing campaigns. "By attacking the women you are attacking the honour of your enemy, you demoralise the men, you scare people into running away," she said. "It's a very effective weapon, because the communities are totally destroyed." The question is whether those in conflict zones who use rape in war will be deterred.

POPSAmnesty USA stops anti-Palestinian Kyl amendment Sen. Kyl proposed an amendment to the budget bill prohibiting use of any of its funds for assistance to Palestinian refugees resettling in the USA - the first time refugees would have been officially discriminated against by nationality in US law. 12,000 AIUSA volunteers emailed or faxed the Senate. Kyl withdrew it.

POPSNaked Man Dies After Being Tasered The man's identity has not been released. A video crew at the scene reported that law enforcement officers talking via radio described the man as under the influence of PCP. According to an Amnesty International report in December, 334 people shocked with Tasers by law enforcement died in the U.S. between June 2001 and August 2008. Most of the deaths were attributed to factors such as drug intoxication, however, medical examiners and coroners concluded that Taser shocks caused or contributed to at least 50 of the 334 deaths. California and Florida were the states with the highest numbers of law-enforcement-related Taser deaths during the seven-year period under study -- 55 and 52, respectivel

POPSLieberman: What I saw in Iraq Very good read. This is the information the president should have been trying to get to the people on a daily basis instead of trying to cut some amnesty deal for some 12-20 illegal immigrants.

POPSAmerican Conservative Magazine: GOP Must Go There may be little Americans can do to atone for this presidency, which will stain our country’s reputation for a long time. But the process of recovering our good name must begin somewhere, and the logical place is in the voting booth this Nov. 7. If we are fortunate, we can produce a result that is seen—in Washington, in Peoria, and in world capitals from Prague to Kuala Lumpur—as a repudiation of George W. Bush and the war of aggression he launched against Iraq.

POPSSTOLEN SISTERS I'm watching a show on TV about this right now. They are vanishing right off the streets and no one sees anything. When a woman goes missing the first thing the police ask is; "Is she Aboriginal"? Finding her becomes a low priority. Maybe after this show they might do something. We can only hope.
