enbar says:
Several people, all of whom I'd objectively call "innocent," have been investigated by the FBI, humiliated, arrested, and effectively destroyed by scandal when photo-developing and computer-repair shops discovered that they had photographed their young children naked. One father lost custody of his kids for taking a photo of them mooning him. The argument is: "we all have to view innocent photos through the eyes of a pedophile, for the good of the children." Effing scary. I mean, I've taken several pictures of my son in the bathtub, and according to this article, that makes me effectively guilty of child pornography. Better take those shots off of Snapfish.com.

Um, now that we have viewed the clip and/or the original article on which the clipped photo was published, does that make us all subject to arrest and criminal prosecution? Can't help but wonder if some will get a guided tour of the federal system for simply reading the information and then later having a hard drive snooped through only to have the above photo found in the cache file. After all, the NEOCONS tend to take things to the furthest possible limit in their conservative zeal.

this seems totally over the top....i wish authorities would focus on real criminals as opposed to a dad snapping a picture of his sons mooning him, as this article suggests.

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, here's a related story referenced briefly by this one. Back in Fall 2005, a South Carolina high school student was given a civics class assignment to take a photo illustrating something related to the Bill of Rights. So, he cut a picture of Bush out of a magazine, tacked it to a bulletin board, and then photographed himself next to the picture giving a thumbs-down sign. (Media accounts always seem to include the additional detail that he attached the Bush picture with a "red thumbtack" through the image's head. Makes it more threatening, I guess. Sort of a voodoo type thing, maybe.) He had the photo developed at Wal-Mart. A Wal-Mart employee called the c...

That's got to be discouraging, when, in a civics project for school about the exercise of free speech and civil rights, the Secret Service shows up and interrogates your student.

Who gets the failing grade? The student or the government?

Fortunately for my parents, I was an exceptionally ugly baby, thus they don't have binders full of vaguely precious naked baby pictures.

Life as it once was has truly changed drastically. We all just need to go back to the basics. We are all so afraid of what 'other's' will think or say that we truly miss the point and happiness that once was allowed.

Life is now like walking on 'eggshells.'

UK, US, same thing. Mother and daughter.
In any case, UK+US is not the World. (Despite Bush and Blair ideas).
In any case I believe that the British society is a little more open on this regard than the Unitedestatian one.

Unitedestatian: Relative to the US. Not American, which would be relative to America, of which US is only part of it.

It's truly sad that we have to be so paranoid about this issue as to chase down grandmothers for snapping pics of their grandchildren.

We discussed this clip and the issue on today's Clipiversity video podcast.

According to current views even a teen aged boy trying to 'cop' his first feel on a date is a pedophile.

It seems like we have fallen into the habit of structuring our society around the lowest common denomenators, instead of around higher potentials. This makes it very dificult for us to elevate our civlization, since we are forced to interpret the world through the perversions of the few, projected onto the rest of us.

In the end, this will only lead to a very depressing outlook on society. Don't we lend these problems credibility by treating them as inevitable?
