Amazing, how is it that they multiply so fast? Don't they have laws on how many children a couple can have.

That law isn't as strict as most Americans think it is.

Even with strict regulation of the one-child law, there are still a LOT of people in China having children. It's only a bandaid.

Hey bmman89, how many kids are you going to have ?

I was once told that Chinese families name their kids buy throwing two or three pans against the wall. The kid would be named what ever sound the pans made. That may be why Wang is so common because many Chinese families can only afford to have one pan. I suggest that they could get more names buy throwing other things like glass jars.

What if they threw large springs? Do they have any people named Zoing-oing-oing? Obviously, some names would be too long. You wouldn't want to name a kid after a train wreck for instance. It wouldn't fit on any form. Also, naming kids after certain noises like flatulence would probably be in bad taste.

There are also many many people with the surname "Wong." As legend would have it, Cho En-Lai devised a methodology in the 1970's which seem simple enough and effective. By central degree, every Wong was listed and given a number. So, for example, a particular Mr. or Mrs. Wong would be Wong No. 7294117. This seemed ingenious and solved the problem, until people started answering the phone. Apparently, what would happen is this: A Wong would pick up the phone and start answer "Wong Number..." and before Mr. Wong could finish stating his number... the caller would HANG UP!!!

An Assamese classmate of mine from college told me the throwing pans around to come up with a name thing, apparently a common joke where they come from

you should learn Chinese first before you can understand Chinese culture, including the surname...

Apparently without the one child a family law their population would be 30 million larger. That's a lot more Wangs.

But imagine in two decades with the new law. The new last name will be Wang-Li-Zang. Maybe some people will just choose rhyming ones? Wang-Zang?

ardose, you are so funny and ignorance. What you said is bullshit. You guys don't understand Chinese culture. Maybe you won't understand it forever cause of your poor brain.

Uhm, yeah, tasteless humor aside, the Chinese do have a odd system for developing names, however, it's not that idiotic pots and pans thing. (If you think that's funny, I bet you forward lots of obnoxious old jokes to all your poor friends via email, don't you?)

The Chinese can use virtually any common words to create a given name, although there is marked preference for words with ostenatious meanings, such as "Great Wealth" or "Outstanding Supreme."

Surnames, on the other hand, are limited to around a few hundred. Doing the math on this, it's not hard to figure out that no matter what happens, with more than a billion Chinese, there's no solution to this problem.

A clarification of the One Child Policy, as Heinz669 alluded, it is not what people think. Most forced abortions and sterilizations actually took place before the plan was formalized around 1989. The formal structure of the One Child Policy is enforced through tax and social service penalties, which are left up to local governments to enforce, thus allowing great lee-way for local interpretation and experimentation.

Also, a husband and wife who are both only children is allowed to have two children, effectively limiting the policy to one generation at a time. Ethnic minorities are also allowed two children to assuage fears that the Hans were attempting to breed them out of existence. (Note:...
