You can make this full screen by clicking the middle button in the lower right corner. This clip is an audio visual "Living Atlas" journey of our world, showing the beauty and fragility of planet Earth as seen through satellite data.

Huge Discovery: Kepler Telescope has Spotted a "Jupiter-sized planet"

HAT-P-7b? What a lousy name for a planet. They should use Star Trek Names like Seti Alpha V. NASA science chief Alan Stern manage to keep Kepler within a workable budget. This telescope came real close to going "back in the box."

As we look back on the moon landing forty years ago, I can’t help but think what a bunch of pathetic sissies we are. Sixty-six years after the Wright brothers’ plan flew a couple feet, we made it to the moon. In the forty years since that, we’ve done crap. Yeah, the new iPhone now has cut and paste, but there is a whole universe out there to explore and conquer.

The giant anvil-shaped cloud hovering 75,000ft above Earth
    clip-on-tie
    by clip-on-tie  7-30-2009
"A giant, anvil-shaped cloud bubbles up towards the Earth's stratosphere, looming over West Africa. The amazing formation would be invisible to anyone on the ground and would even be obscure from a regular passenger jet since they can reach up to 75,000ft. But astronauts captured the astonishing picture from hundreds of miles up as they orbited the globe on the International Space Station. Anvil clouds are formed mostly from ice and normally form in the upper parts of thunderstorms. They get their shape from the fact that rising warm air in thunderstorms expands and spreads out as the air bumps up against the bottom of the stratosphere. Streaks of snow are often seen falling out of the edges of anvils. This light snow usually evaporates as it falls through the relatively dry air surrounding the upper part of the thunderstorm."

Could Earth Be Hit, Like Jupiter Just Was?
    clip-on-tie
    by clip-on-tie  7-29-2009    2
"Small risk" "Billions of years ago, impacts were far more common. Our moon retains a record of the pummeling it and Earth took: the moon's craters remain, while on Earth, most scars of ancient impacts have been folded back into the planet or weathered away. Today's solar system is far less crowded, and in fact Jupiter, having more mass and gravity, scoops up a lot of the dangerous objects, as does the sun. Currently just one NEO of all the objects scientists are tracking poses any significant chance of hitting the Earth — 2007 VK184. If this roughly 425-foot-wide (130 meters) asteroid hit our planet, it would strike with an energy of roughly 150 million tons of TNT, or more than 10,000 times that of the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima."

It turns out James Cameron wasn't blowing pink goo-laced smoke up our ass; that stuff really exists. Perfluorocarbons are fluids that contain shitloads of oxygen, making it possible to breathe liquid. They originally tested it back in the 60s on mice, with a certain degree of success... sort of

Do you have the right stuff to be a NASA Pillownaut?
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  6-24-2009
The effects of lying in bed for months on end aren’t pretty. Our bodies are used to being used. Astronauts and “pillownauts” as some study participants call themselves, experience muscle atrophy and even some mild bone-density loss. They also can experience headaches, nausea and a host of other unpleasant symptoms. It can take astronauts weeks or months to readjust to the Earth’s gravitational force. “If I hadn’t done it, I would have just gotten another IT job, probably,” Archuletta said. But she’s a space lover and wanted to contribute to humanity’s return to the moon and Mars. And maybe do a little something different. “Something unique, something not in an office environment,” she said. “It was a chance to confront stillness in a way.”

this not only demonstrates that the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change models are failing to accurately predict global warming, but also presents a serious challenge to the integrity of the AGW hypothesis. Mr DiPuccio concludes “When all is said and done, if the climate system is not accumulating heat, the hypothesis is invalid.”
