POPSObama Stands Up to the Military Despite recent months of Pentagon "leaks," and lobbying the White House is not rolling over to military demands. This action is almost unprecedented, taking great courage and political determination. Our military is suppose to be controlled and led by civilian, political leaders; not by generals. POPSObama: Less State Secrets In the Bush Era many bad policies (torture, secret prisons, wiretappings, etc.) were covered up by being declared "state secrets." In a few court cases in the new Obama Administration, this was still the case because that was still the way the law, administrative procedure was. Now it's changed. Unfortuantely there is a joke in U.S. politics about "that depends upon what your definition of 'is,' is." -- meaning, on specific issues - is his objection to 'nukes,' in Iran and North Korea objections to nuke weapons or also objection to Iran's nuclear power program (which is legal and in accord with the UN IAEA). Does he desire for reducing nukes and being honest with nukes include the "secret," nuclear weapons of Israel that somehow always fail to get mentioned. Surprisingly firm, while committed to Israel's security he said the increase in Israel settlements was "illegitimate." - a rather firm statement and talked about the 1967 borders of Israel, and how Palestine needs a "contagious," free and real independent state. But none of these things would seem acceptable to Israel at all, their "peace terms," clearly sounding like "we go on with aggression and expansion," statements.

When I read a few years ago, during the growing nightmare of the Bush years, that the Red Cross was being hindered in access to Gitmo prisoners, I was disgusted. Then it was annoying to hear him trashed with criticisms that were nothing more than gossip, ill-will, or deliberately misconstrued versions of events. Her, as far as I'm concerned is the first specific action that many Obama supporters would probably not like. It says that the new Attorney General in the Obama Administration has started a review of all cases like this, cases where claims of national security may have been wrongly used to block the truth. If you read his words in this clip, he says cut waste, the first example being the wasteful spending such as federal crop subsidies for millionaire farmers. That's sort of hard to complain about.
