Why is Marijuana Illegal?
sincitykitty
by sincitykitty  10-13-2009
Those who voted on the legal fate of this plant never had the facts, but were dependent on information supplied by those who had a specific agenda to deceive lawmakers. You’ll see below that the very first federal vote to prohibit marijuana was based entirely on a documented lie on the floor of the Senate.

sexual violence as "a tactic of war to humiliate, dominate, instil fear in & disperse"
chara
by chara  6-15-2009    1
Amnesty International says women and girls are being targeted in conflicts around the world while the authorities do little or nothing to prevent it. In a report called Lives Blown Apart, the organisation says these crimes persist because those who commit them know prosecutions are rare. Despite promises, treaties and legal mechanisms, governments have failed to protect women and girls, Amnesty says. The human rights group says its investigations have found that violence against women is not just a by-product of war, but often a deliberate military strategy, with women particularly targeted in ethnic cleansing campaigns. "By attacking the women you are attacking the honour of your enemy, you demoralise the men, you scare people into running away," she said. "It's a very effective weapon, because the communities are totally destroyed." The question is whether those in conflict zones who use rape in war will be deterred.

Mythbusters: Famous Sayings
cakebelly
by cakebelly  6-15-2009
more: British PM Jim Callaghan never said “Crisis? What crisis?” – a hostile press invented the career-killing phrase on his behalf. Headline writers can also claim Harold Macmillan’s “You’ve never had it so good”. Sadly, nobody really thought JFK said “I am a doughnut” on a visit to Berlin; pedantically, his attempt at “I am a Berliner” should have left out the indefinite article, but the crowd reaction showed that no one doubted what he meant.

Voyage to the center of the “Plastic Vortex”
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  5-25-2009    1
It has been clipped here before, but I think it is important for us to keep it in our conscience. An expedition is being put together to determine how best to remove as much of it as possible and what can be done with it once it is removed. The action of breaking down the plastic is leaching toxic chemicals into the water plus marine wildlife is eating the little toxic pieces. "The real fix is back on land. We need to provide the means, globally, to care for our disposable waste," said Jim Dufour, a senior engineer at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, who is advising the trip.

The New Socialism: Global Collectivist Society Is Coming Online

From the article: "We underestimate the power of our tools to reshape our minds. Did we really believe we could collaboratively build and inhabit virtual worlds all day, every day, and not have it affect our perspective? The force of online socialism is growing. Its dynamic is spreading beyond electrons—perhaps into elections." Interesting thought.
