POPSCalifornia sees $4 gasoline up ahead How about it's already here....... our gas is currently $3.97. I saw $4.35 in Malibu my birthday weekend and the Myth Gang in Santa Barbara tells me it's been over $4/gallon since early last week.

POPSFans Love Carpenters, not carpenters The Carpenters also owned apartment complexes in Downey named for some of their hit songs, "Close to You" was located across the street from "We've Only Just Begun". I lived in Downey for a short time between 1980 and 1983 -- we would occasionally drive by these places. Karen Carpenter's funeral kept me from getting home for hours -- the streets were so jammed with cars, walking would have been much faster.

POPSAuthor Comes to Natural Food's 'Defense' Interesting advice: "Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food." None of my great-grandmothers have been around since 1960. I wonder if any of them would have known what Fritos were. Hmmm.....

POPSStorm is Late but Still Huge We lost a small tree in the last winds just after Christmas. Several lavender bushes in the winds before that. I'm really glad she don't have any large trees near the house. Our neighbor was busy repairing his roof yesterday late afternoon -- they worked until it got really dark. The people across the street had a tree trimmer come today and severely cut back the large tree near their house. Hopefully, we won't have much damage.

POPSThieves Target Vehicles' Catalytic Converters Metals overall must be getting pricey -- in Los Angeles, copper wire is being stolen out of street lights -- hundreds of street lights. Platinum I guess I understand, but copper? and from street lights? It seems as though SOMEONE would see street lights being taken apart. But remember, this is Los Angeles. The catalytic converter theft problem will only be solved by legislation -- making it illegal to sell the converters to scrap metal dealers.

POPSArrests announced in Malibu's Corral Canyon Fi Those pesky debit cards will trip you up everytime! I drove through Malibu last Sunday morning and the hillsides have a bombed and burned out look after the last 2 fires. A large banner is hanging on a fence near Corral Canyon that reads "Thanks to Everyone Who Helped Fight the Fires".

POPSToo wired, Techies Regroup, Reach Out This is not a surprising development. People are expected to interact and process information at a rate never seen before -- chalk this up as another example of people being more connected and yet paradoxically feeling more isolated. Gadgets and devices are no substitute to human interactions.

POPSPolygamist Sentence: 10 Years to Life in Prison We've been watching this scene unfold for quite a while. This group routinely dumped unwanted teen-aged boys in St. George Utah, who end up on the streets (Lost Boys). Some are being taken in by other (straight) Mormon families. Jeffs' group is building a large compound in Texas, which has ruffled the locals there (they fly over it and take surveillance photos).

POPSAshes to Ashes, at Disneyland There is also a survey with this article: "For amusement, where would you park your remains?" Disneyland comes in with 64%, Sea World at 14%, Six Flags Magic Mountain at 10%, Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios come in at 6.5% and 5% respectively. Big the big question is -- where in Disneyland would you like to remain? The article cites Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. You'll need to choose a classic spot that isn't likely to be redesigned or removed. Choose wisely.....

POPSIt's A Fat World After All Disney has to change a ride because "guests" are bottoming out the boats at "Small World". I wonder if they will relocate the frozen chocolate covered bananas and the churros carts away from the entrance of that particular ride................

POPSStoryCorps: Listening Is an Act of Love During the NPR's Morning Edition this morning, I caught a story about a new book coming out about StoryCorps, a project that provides recording opportunities to people simply to tell their story. On Fridays, Morning Edition features one of those recorded stories and this has become my favorite "NPR moment" during the week. Click the link above the photo to read the article. There is a link on the page that gives you excerpts from the book as well as an audio version of the story. This is not to be missed.
