    Book: Bats Sing, Mice Giggle

more (at source): Among the recent discoveries outlined in their book, Bats Sing, Mice Giggle, is research that elephants are capable of detecting seismic vibrations through the bones in their feet and nerves in their trunks. By producing low frequency rumbles in their calls, elephants can communicate through the ground over hundreds of miles. Researchers studying bats have also found that certain bats produce songs as well as the chirps they use for echolocation and hunting. The false vampire bat, or Megaderma lyra, uses distinctive social calls that sound like songs when recorded and played back at a slower speed, to attract female mates while the sac-winged bat, Saccopteryx bilineata, uses songs to mark out its territory.

more (at source): Asish and colleagues made their discovery by extracting proteins from the livers of two long-lived bat species (Tadarida brasiliensis and Myotis velifer) and young adult mice and exposed them to chemicals known to cause protein misfolding. After examining the proteins, the scientists found that the bat proteins exhibited less damage than those of the mice, indicating that bats have a mechanism for maintaining proper structure under extreme stress.

continues: The Plan: Because bats can carry a good amount of weight and tend to sneak into buildings and such, the plan was to make an army of flying rodent suicide bombers and release them over Japan. The little fellas had small napalm explosive kits made for them, which were probably the cutest incendiary devices ever, and then cases were constructed that would be dropped from B-29s, releasing the bats.
