POPSCarbon dioxide measured using Oxygen in the air Article only available in PDF with a subscription to Nature (or at just about any library . . .) "The main sources and sinks believed to contribute to the gradients are fossil-fuel burning (which occurs mostly in the Northern Hemisphere), the natural pumping of CO2 and O2 from the northern to the southern hemisphere by the thermohaline circulation of the Atlantic Ocean, the exchange of CO2 and O2 with land biota, and the uptake of excess anthropogenic CO2 by the oceans."

POPSIt's not just Imus These clips are only the tip of the iceberg. Go to the link for an unbelievable number of examples of hate speech by the right-wing media.

POPSBush wants it both ways on border control 1.5 years earlier: "Our actions to integrate manpower, technology and infrastructure are getting results. And one of the best examples of success is the Arizona Border Control Initiative, which the government launched in 2004. In the first year of this initiative -- now, listen to this, listen how hard these people are working here -- agents in Arizona apprehended nearly 500,000 illegal immigrants, a 42-percent increase over the previous year." If a 42-percent increase in apprehensions is one of the best examples of success, how are we making progress when the number of people apprehended is down by nearly 30%?

POPSRep. Obey has a hard job Obey evidently doesn't follow my favorite philosopher Immanuel Kant, but (perhaps because of the positive slant he is given in this article) I find a lot to like about him.

POPSClimate Change: abrupt changes I hate taking some of these statements out of context . . . I think this is a subscription article, but hopefully you can access the whole thing.

POPSClimate Change: glacial flow dominates ice sheet mass losses "satellite observations reveal that glacier accelerations of 20 to 100% have occurred over the past decade. The key question today is whether these accelerations may be sustained, or even increase, in the future. "The discovery that particular ice streams and glaciers are dominating ice sheet mass losses means that today our ability to predict future changes is limited. . . In consequence, the view that the changing sea-level contribution of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets in the 21st century will be both small and negative as a result of accumulating snow in Antarctica . . . is now uncertain." I think this is a subscription article, but I clipped a lot of the good stuff. The issue is available at most libraries.

POPSU.S. Navy fanning the flames in Iran I love that last quote by U.S. Navy Cmdr. Kevin Aandahl. Our simulated attacks on your ships are for your own good. If you have a problem with us simulating killing you, that's your problem. Please help stop yet another unjust war that will kill many, many innocent civilians, large numbers of U.S. troops, and large numbers of Iranian military, and will only lead to more war.
