POPSPictures from the Pau da Bandeira Festival A party in nearby Barbalha, ostensibly in celebration of Saint Anthony. It actually has more to do with ancient pagan fertility rites. The bottom picture is of a group of "penitents" who practice a medieval form of Catholicism--including self flagellation.

POPSEarthquake in Brazil It was in Sao Paulo, so we did not feel it here. However, Brazilians are in shock. Such things are not supposed to happen in Brazil.

POPSThe Flying Priest If it were not for the fact that he had actually pulled this off before, I would say this guy is a good candidate for the Darwin Award.

POPSMaricio de Sousa creates Japanese Character I love de Sousa's work. I learned Portuguese reading Monica, Cebolinha, and Cascão--althought my all-time favorite character is Chico Bento. His work gave me some good insights into Brazilian culture as well.

POPSTraffic in Brazil Just a little something to cheer you up on your morning commute...unless you happen to live in São Paulo.

POPSThe Brazilian Orkut Rule This is true to a point...but Brazilians also seem to get into a technological rut. Hence they are still using Orkut and MSN when both of these "services" are pretty much on the junk heap of their respective sectors in the rest of the world. Another example is the continued use of pirated Microsoft Windows OS's, when perfectly good and cheaper (or free) alternatives are quite available.

POPSSave the Amazon...Kick out the Missionaries? This kind of yellow-journalism is unfortunately very prevalent here in Brazil. I find it amazing that the author engages in classic post-modern thought (the tribal religions are just as valid as Christianity) and then accuses the missionary of being a "post-modern Messiah". It is possible to buy into this guy's screed until you realize that what he is calling for is the wholesale relegation of an entire people group to the stone age--an age which he is presumably unwilling to be relegated himself.

POPSShould Brazil Fear Venezuela? A pretty funny (IMHO) video clip that ran on Globo television a while back. It is causing quite a stir here--perhaps it will get people to think. A subtitled version can be seen at http://www.overstream.net/view.php?oid=n3nmajrym7a6

POPSCurrent situation in Brazil This article is a great analysis of the current economic and social situation in Brazil. The whole thing is worth a read. The clipped portions offer just a taste of the author's observations.

POPSPersecution of Christian Congressman in Brazil Here in Brazil the pro-gay movement is not just interested in obtaining equal rights--they are trying to shut up anybody who might disagree with them. This is just one of many such instances throughout the country, on all social levels.

POPSBrazil, Venezuela of the Future? Interesting article by Cristovam Buarque-- Brazilian senator and former presidential candidate. Don't agree with all of it, but he makes some very good points.

POPSSara's Solo Sara is a freshman at the seminary where I work here in Brazil. She sang a solo during a choir festival the other night. The sound quality is not good, but her solo certainly was.

POPSPolice to Cremate Body of American Basketball Star This is an outrage, and it looks more and more like a cover up. I am 99.9 percent sure that the cremation is designed to hide evidence that it was something other than a suicide. I far from the case and have no evidence, but I do know how things work down here.

POPSBrazil's Nuclear Sub This is a fascinating development. I would disagree with the statement that Brazil has no enemies in South America. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is a very real threat, and I believe the Brazilian military knows that. An oil-rich Brazil could be a hindrance to Chavez' planned domination of the region.

POPSGisele Doesn't Want Dollars Can't say as I blame her...especially if she spends much time here in her native country. I wish there was a way I could get paid in Euros.
