POPSBrazil's Nuclear Sub This is a fascinating development. I would disagree with the statement that Brazil has no enemies in South America. Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is a very real threat, and I believe the Brazilian military knows that. An oil-rich Brazil could be a hindrance to Chavez' planned domination of the region.

POPSSadness Two of my favorite Brazilian musicians--the brother/sister duo Sandy and Junior--are splitting up after 17 years. Best of luck to both of them.

POPSEducation Reform in Brazil There is no way this can live up to its promises. I do feel like it is a good start, but the education issues here require much more than simply throwing money at the problem.

POPSPictures from Ceará, Brazil These are some shots from a camp I am involved with near the city of Iguatu, in the state of Ceará, Brazil. There are even a couple pics of yours truly.

POPSAccident in front of Padre Cicero People on their way to thank Padre Cicero for blessings received are killed by runaway garbage truck. Tragic. This is about three miles from where I live. I can see the statue of the Padre from my house.

POPSEverything Ends in Samba--Even George W Bush This is awesome! Not all was protests and grownups acting like spoiled children. Bush's Brazil trip had it's moments that truly characterize Brazil. Too bad they didn't get too much press. Be sure to check out Condi at the end. She's obviously done this before!

POPSBush Praises Brazil in Haiti Very well-put observation on the part of the President. Somewhat sly, considering all the criticism Bush gets here because of Iraq.

POPSPalestine? Nope, Brazil. This illustrates the true colors of those here who are protesting Bush's visit.

POPSLula at Camp David Lula will be the first Latin American president to be received at Camp David since 1991. Cool! I like to see Lula and Bush getting "tight". It must make Chavez gnash his teeth--something else that makes me happy.

POPSIdealogical Criteria My favorite line, translated: "He said that there is no ideological prejudice in the government, but observed that those who had the same ideology as the bosses have priority." Huh?

POPSLula to Iran--No Nukes I'm usually quite critical of Lula, so take this as evidence that I can be fair to him when he gets it right. I did enjoy the caveat at the end--"he was uncertain whether or not Brazil had sold or transferred any nuclear equipment or technology to Iran in the past."

POPSBrazil Crash Caused by Air Control Error So why are the two American pilots still stuck in Rio with no passports and no recourse? I think it is about time for the Brazilian judicial system to give up hope that this is somehow their fault, and let them go home to their families.

POPSLuiz Gonzaga Great article on Exu--a city about an hour from where I live--and it's most famous son. His descriptions are vivid and accurate. He even mentions the "Swing Motel", which sits at one of the entrances to the seminary where I work.

POPSBrasil Brasileiro Some nice examples of Brazilian music and dance, from a show that is playing somewhere.

POPSAnti-Semitism in Brazil It would appear that by simply defending it's right to exist, Israel is giving the anti-semitic scum of the earth the excuse they need to show themselves.

POPSVERY Interesting Article on Fidel This is from the Folha de Sao Paulo, one of the more respected Brazilian jornals. I will include some translations below. I learned a lot of things I did not know.
