POPSJust don't look up Robert Hardman of the UK's Daily Mail shares the tale of his ride aboard the Flying Scotsman, a 156-foot hot air balloon. The Scotsman and dozens of other balloons flew in the International Balloon Festival in Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland. This marks the 60th anniversary of the festival. Link via Neatorama

POPSKnitted digestive system For some reason, looking at this reminds me of a scene from the Steve Martin movie, Parenthood , where he tries unsuccessfully to make a balloon animal for his son's birthday party. Holding up a knotted mass of skinny balloons, he pronounces it "your lower intestines." The crowd went wild. Matie Trewe's attempt is considerably more detailed and complicated. Pretty cool. Link

POPSThe happiest eternal resting place on earth It didn't surprise me to learn that there are people who want their ashes scattered at Disneyland. It did surprise me to learn that there's a dedicated cleaning crew for just such occasions. It seems that cremated human remains contain particulates that violate the health code. Recently, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride was shut down when a woman was spotted scattering a powdery substance around the inside of the ride. You almost wonder who'd notice, especially in that particular location where it's dark and meant to look dusty anyway. I wonder if those ash-scatterers realize their loved ones ultimately end up stuck to a Hepa filter in a Disney vacuum. Link
