Keeping homefires burning at Gaiam
boliyou
by boliyou  1-3-2008
Green, sustainable living site Gaiam offers these two flame-bearing items, both worth a look. The Eco-Glass Fireplace is a portable fire pit that uses clean-burning (no soot or smoke) renewable biofuel. It outputs CO2 and steam, in about the same amounts as human breath. According to the site, humidity levels increase with usage. It also comes with a variety of essential oils. It's beautiful and looks like it could be very useful, but it is expensive ($848, plus $160 per replacement fuel) and heavy at 60 lb. The 13.5" Globe Candelabra is handmade rusted steel and holds eight candles. It can be set on a stand or suspended by its chain. I can completely see this hanging beside a bed, desk or sofa, or over a dining table. I love the organic, old-world look of it. $88.

Battle of the holly glasses
boliyou
by boliyou  12-20-2007
Tolly has to be one of my favorite holiday symbols. There's something very cheerful about it, despite its thorny leaves. I think it's the perfect theme to decorate holiday tableware, and I've been looking for a little "something special" for holiday glassware. Here are a few choices: 1. Holly Leaf 2. Holly Days 3. Festive Holly decisions, decisions...

Milk jug lights at Anthropologie
boliyou
by boliyou  12-20-2007
Not for sale, but a cool DIY idea, especially for a kitchen, is the in-store design in New York's Anthropologie store, found by Apartment Therapy (I love those guys!). A round cord with a basic plastic fitting mounts through the cap to a refrigerator light (the long, tube kind). Just screw the clean, empty milk jug back on, hang as a pendant, and you're done. I wonder if there's a CFL bulb that would fit the bill? Link

A Playmobil Christmas
boliyou
by boliyou  12-9-2007
I love Playmobil. You can have your Fisher Price and Lego people, for me, the Playmobil sets are the best. They have an adorable nativity set, that contains my one deal-breaker feature: baby Jesus comes out of the manger. In our house, Jesus doesn't go into the manger until Christmas Eve (Santa puts him there, because Santa "gets" the meaning of the season). Therefore, Jesus must come out of the manger. They also have wonderfully charming Christmas scenes, and three different types of advent calendars (my favorite is the Christmas in the Park ) Link

Snowball home decorations from Cottage Living
boliyou
by boliyou  12-7-2007
These pretty windowbox and wreath decorations are easy to make. You'll find the instructions here , but they're basically just styrofoam balls coated in fake snow and glued together with white lights or strung on a wire for the wreath. They're good for indoor or outdoor decorating. Link via Apartment Therapy

Dollhouse from recycled cardboard boxes at A Little Hut
boliyou
by boliyou  11-30-2007    1
Patricia of A Little Hut has some great ideas for recycling/repurposing things into new, useable items. I love this idea of building a dollhouse out of cardboard boxes. It's a great parent/child project, and can be modified to meet a child's specific interests. Why not a castle, a fire house, a car? Once the project is complete, it's easy to continue the theme by using recycled carpet remnants for the floors, wallpaper for the walls, even magazine cut-outs for art, or to make paper doll people. I'll be interested in the follow-up photos to see where she goes with it. Link

Advent House from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
boliyou
by boliyou  11-29-2007    2
Ever since I saw National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, I've wanted this advent calendar. It's an absolutely stunning Victorian mansion with beautiful artwork hidden behind shaded windows. The whole thing can be lit from within, giving both the open and closed windows a soft, warm holiday glow. I finally found it at theadventhouse.com . I was dismayed to find that only 250 of the houses are made each year, and that they cost $449 each, plus shipping! The house has to be ordered a year in advance, too. The advance ordering, I can understand. It must take a long time to construct something of this quality and craftsmanship. Although the price is extraordinarily high, when you consider it in terms of the heirloom-quality, it may be worth it. It's good-sized, too, at 31.25" W x 21.5"H x 11"D. 22 pounds, and will take up a bit of space. I still want one, though I doubt it will ever be something I'm able to own.

Porto decanter set from Signals
boliyou
by boliyou  11-29-2007
Elegant decanter set modeled after 17th century schnapps pipes. You warm the bowl of the cup in your hands, and drink through the built-in straw. The four 3.5" cups and 11.75" decanter are made of hand-blown glass. When not in use, the cups hang on the neck of the decanter, which makes for an intriguing glass sculpture, whether the decanter is empty or not. $39.95 at Signals

Macys Thanksgiving Parade Water Globe for 2007
boliyou
by boliyou  11-22-2007
I love these annual snowglobes. I have the one from 2000, which may be the last one to contain the World Trade Center. This one is particularly nice. The ones that incorporate a snowglobe into statuary can be particularly charming. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without the miniature Tom Turkey float. $65.00 at Macys

Made of lead crystal and designed by Arik Levy, the large is 9" tall and the small is 5.5" high. Levy named the Kaz candlesticks after Kaz mountain in Turkey. $110-$145 at Red Envelope.

The Slanket (a blanket with sleeves) is a full-sized blanket that covers the wearer up to the shoulders. The sleeves allow full use of the hands while still being covered. This sounds like a fine idea, especially on chilly winter evenings when you want to keep the heat low. This looks like a pretty easy DIY, and is also available at Amazon. Link

Discovery.com Moon in my room
boliyou
by boliyou  11-8-2007
A very cool idea, the light rotates through the moon's phases. According to the Discovery Channel's Web site, the light boasts: * Built-in-light sensor illuminates moon when it gets dark * Rotates through 12 lunar phases * True-to-life, detailed lunar moonscape * Easily mounts to wall with three different hanging angles Includes: * Calendar with moon phase charts * Audio CD with guided tour to the moon and beyond * Detailed instructions The product reviews are mixed, but all agree that it goes through batteries like crazy. Even so, it would look wicked cool on a dark blue wall, no?

Flow kitchen system
boliyou
by boliyou  10-31-2007
John Arndt designed this modular kitchen storage system to create an interactive/integrated living system, "utilizing the waste of one system as nutrient or fuel for another." Runoff from the dish drain/storage waters the edible plants below. Waste from the edible plants and other organic kitchen items feeds the worm composter, which produces mulch for the plants. The earthenware storage boxes can serve multiple functions, and their lids can be used as hot plates. They're stackable and arrangeable. The largest can serve as an evaporative cooler. I'd put the whole thing on a cutting board-surfaced area, dropping a dry sink as he's done here. Put the mini-kitchen on ther, include some running water, and you're all set. Brilliant! via Apartment Therapy: Green
