" if the devices we use are artificial extensions of our minds, then they could be enhancing our cognitive powers more than they are diminishing them. Technology means I forget fewer birthdays, not more, for example." i find this debate fascinating. i for once support that which will assist me crossing borders of perception and limitations.

What is going on with the US and Canada over a stretch of water
    rachel43
    by rachel43  9-16-2007    1
What is Bush trying to do now? He is trying to stir up animosity with the US nearest neighbours over a stretch of water that they both could share? I don't know why they have to even debate the issue after all. What happened to their alliance? Wouldn't their alliance hold over this bit of water. I think it is daft that it is being turned into such an issue. If they are going to fall out over this stretch of water, then Bush will lose out on his plan for the super highway(which is a mistake anyway). Bush doesn't like compromises does he, unless it is his way. Sorry to be so bold, but I have noticed that when it comes to compromise in diplomacy that is an area he lacks in. Tact is another. Why doesn't he work out a joint agreement with Canada instead of toing and froing as to who the waterway belongs to. Surely Bush can find diplomacy in this matter instead of making this a bone of contention between the US and Canada, their nearest allies and neighbours.

NATIONAL REVIEW'S "SHIP OF FOOLS" VIDEO
    thinkingblue
    by thinkingblue  7-19-2007    1
This is a must read article for all those who live in reality. It's an interesting detailed account of what the neoconservatives have to say when they think rational people are not listening... In other words when THEY LET THEIR HAIR DOWN and tell each other the nonsense that is the core of their beliefs. Read and cringe as you realize what LA LA WORLD these people live in and hope beyond hope that they don't succeed in making us all believe that such a selfish, megalomania world is for real!!! thinkingblue PS: Please watch the youtube video to get a picture image of this daft neocon event. Materialist on the March: Stop global warming by not having babies
    willhelm
    by willhelm  8-7-2007    4
The materialist revival is surely emboldened and history is on a crash-course for centennial re-runs. Add to this the encroachment of socialist values, the tyranny of political correctness, militant-atheism, militant Islamo-fascism, environmental propagandists, the support for eugenics, the dismissal of the scientific method, the general common ignorance of our Paris Hilton world and we are not far from the thinking of Malthus. Of course all of the materialist rantings are hooey. There is no population crisis and there never will be. There is no global food and water crisis and there never will be. There is no global warming crisis and there never will be. The whispers of this lunacy have been gaining over time.

This is one of those things us "liberals" already knew. It's infuriating that for the last 8 years this has been going on, anyone with a brain could read the international news, compare it to our own, and see how censored and skewed our news reporting is. You'd have to be daft to not think that the mainstream media outlets were being either manipulated or actively playing the lap-dog to the administration. So to see this article today, I was at first happy this is finally making blips on the media radar and angered that we only dare confront it at the end of the presidency. This should have come to light at least 4 years ago. The amount of criminal behavior the media is complacent with in our admin is abhorable.

A 12-step program that I doubt would work
    willhelm
    by willhelm  3-24-2008    2
Step #6: Repeat after me, “Separation of church and state” exists nowhere in the Constitution. The first amendment does not require the removal of Christmas trees from the village green, the 10 Commandments from court house walls or “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. All it does is forbid Congress from establishing a state religion, such as the Church of England, and anybody who tells you otherwise is a liar and, most likely, a card-carrying member of the ACLU. Step #7 Stop using the word “big” as a pejorative. There is nothing intrinsically bad about big oil, big agriculture or big pharmaceuticals. Overall, they do a very good job of keeping our cars on the road, food on our tables and most of us over 50 alive and functioning. On the other hand, big government, which so many liberals simply adore, represents a usurpation of the allegedly inalienable rights of individuals.

"I don't say the rules and rituals are archaic or daft, I give their esoteric meaning. A lot were difficult for me, but they work for other people. "The loo paper, for example, is a big issue. It sounds stupid, but tearing is related to one of the 39 jobs involved in building of the Temple in Jerusalem, so it isn't allowed on the Sabbath. I thought I had shown the beauty of the purity laws. But it depends, of course, on what the reader brings to the book." When she was eight, her disabled elder sister, Michelle, was sent to a home. From then on, she seemed to fear - and therefore to court - a similar rejection, but her parents never talked to her about it. Instead they were self-absorbed and fanned her feelings of... I search for the word. "Guilt," she supplies with some passion. "All Jews have it. We are all Holocaust survivors, even those brought up in London." ...Telegraph

White house to go it alone on immigration
    hudgal1
    by hudgal1  8-11-2007
I think I finally see the problem with passing a bill. Too many big business advocates fearful of the consequences on business if we actually ENFORCED existing immigration laws. Chertoff and Gutierrez are a couple of crack-pots, I think parts of the proposed immigration bill were a little daft, like the ridiculously low fine illegals who BROKE the law to get here in the first place, and letting them get in line ahead of the people who actually went through the legal application process. I guess this is better than nothing though.
