    Monsanto's Udder Disgrace
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  2-8-2008    2
The milk labeling controversy - and other corporate practices of Monsanto - have been issues for years. For a while every time I saw my Senator, I would greet him with the same comment, "Hey Bernie, when are you going to do something about Monsanto?" Senator Bernie would shake his head and raise his hands in frustration. I often heard him say that no matter how bad you think things are in Washington, they are really much worse. While the Congress is distracted with growth hormones taken by sports figures, our farm animals are being abused with other hormones. Baseball players have a free choice. Cows don't. None of us have a choice. Not if Monsanto has anything to say about it and they do. Money talks.

Not just a Farm Bill, it's a food bill
    bignosemousie
    by bignosemousie  11-5-2007    1
If the eaters and all the other “people on the outside” make themselves heard, we just might end up with something that looks less like a farm bill and more like the food bill a poorly fed America so badly needs. Call your Senator!

The Ark of Taste is a project of the Slow Food Foundation. Its goal is to reintroduce forgotten foods, so that they do not go extinct. Large scale agrobusiness really threatens the existence of thousands of plant types, as well as animal species. Really interesting website with lots of information.

Why is fast food so cheap?
    bignosemousie
    by bignosemousie  4-18-2007    4
"Many consumers would like to support skilled farmers who produce healthy products, are good stewards of their land, work to preserve clean water and open spaces around our communities, and are contributing to a secure food system. Our representatives need to know this is the kind of farming we want to support with our tax dollars in the new 2007 Farm Bill. " See source for links, information and opportunities for change. Eat what you know
    bignosemousie
    by bignosemousie  4-18-2007    2
I'm so excited about this book coming out next month. The author and her family decide to eat only local produce, dairy and meat for one year (with a few exceptions). She wanted a greater connection to her sustanence, as well as a way to cut down on fossil fuel consumption. I really look forward to teaching my daughter about this concept. Food isn't really made by magic by elves in a tree. Someone put their back into it. Someone worried about rainfall. Someone put their sweat, tears and love into each bite she eats. My parents have a garden every year, and this year she is old enough to really help. Doesn't a tomato taste better when you've grown it yourself? I certainly appreciate every lemon I manage to coax from my little tree, in a way I don't seem to care about storebought lemons.
