POPSWe need to work together As a woman, a conservative, a mother, a Christian, a Texan, a southerner, an American and a bacon-lover: I am categorized and vilified quite often. These qualities alone or in connection with each other put me in groups that are considered stupid, hate-filled, racist, bigoted, naive, unqualified, greedy, blind, selfish, willfully ignorant, phobic, slutty, earth-hating, anti-feminist, weak and worthless. I am not alone. Anyone here at CM can identify with at least one group that is equally vilified. We are a varied people, humans. If we keep painting with such a broad brush, the finer lines get lost. The incidences of actual hate and actual evil blend seamlessly among the imagined incidences. It's a wonder anyone can see clearly. Let's build each other up for a while.

POPSMoses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom From Q and A with the author (first clip link): Q: What message does Moses impart? Three values lessons can be gleaned from the book. Freedom is a God-given right. God is always with us. And we should always be free to dream. Harriet Tubman’s role in the freedom struggle can give readers a sense of their own potential and power. "Every great dream begins with a dreamer," said Tubman. "Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world."

POPSThe closing of a life We’re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware - beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.

POPSUncaging my joy I decided last week that I would like to live more generously. I find that I clutch things (my money, my time, my love) too closely to my breast, and this is from fear. My fear cripples my joy. I am going to uncage my joy.

POPSSchool policy was to swim naked The whole article is pretty interesting. I wonder what brought about the policy change? LOL. Wow. The author attended this school in the 60s. It is interesting how the men older than him seemed to have less of a problem with it all.

POPSGood job making that baby By Maggie Mason from MightyGirl. BNM says: With the latest crop of celebrity babies, the magazine covers are loaded with "how I lost the baby weight" stories. The outright disdain and loathing that Hollywood has for body fat is sad. You can't even create an entire human being without someone curling their lip at your glorious birthing hips, your nourishing thighs, your comforting breasts, your full joyful face. My body is more than my size. My body is amazing.

POPSChuck Norris on hit list Check out what Mr. Norris is doing for kids. "It is what I have been doing for more than a decade with my "KickStart" program, which began in Houston, Texas, teaching 150 at-risk children martial arts as part of the PE curriculum. Since that time, our program, which instills discipline and respect and raises self-esteem, has grown to serve more than 6,000 youngsters year round at 37 schools in Dallas and Houston, Texas. To date, KickStart has graduated more than 50,000 students with many going on to college and becoming successful in their own right."

POPSCopy Editing America I applaud this man. I think he hits the nail on the head when he said that mistakes breed mistakes. I realize that a language is an evolving entity, but it still irks me when a word gets added to the dictionary (thus legitimizing it) because it becomes overused incorrectly.

POPSSeeing the Everyday A new magazine. The site won't clip as I'd like it, so go check it out. It's a quarterly magazine "focusing on the daily interactions taking place at home." It seeks "to honestly tell and simply show the everyday beauties found in quiet and humble moments of our own homes and yards and with those whom we love most." And it's advertisement free!
