POPSWhen encountering the negative Oh, how I am trying to teach this to my daughter. She will enter the angst-ridden teen years before I know it. I pray that she is armed with self-confidence, with humility, with kindness. As any woman here can testify, those girls can be mean mean mean. How then do I prepare her for the hurt, isolation and moral challenges she will encounter? There never seems enough time to build her courage, to fortify her heart, to light the path beneath her feet. This time will be here before I know it, before I am finished, I fear.

POPSThe story before the story begins With the advent of e-books, what will happen to personal inscriptions and notations? Will anyone mourn the loss of mystery when purchasing a used book and finding a long-ago written love note in the pages? I've long felt a book was a treasure, and having a note from the author only increased its value to me.

POPSRigatoni and mushrooms Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium-low heat, add olive oil and saute garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes until onions are soft, about 5 minutes. (Garlic shouldn’t burn since it’s “embedded” in onions.) Turn up heat slightly and add mushrooms, cooking until they release their liquid, about 3-5 minutes and adding more oil if you feel the mixture is too dry. Stir in lemon zest, salt and pepper and transfer to the bowl with pasta. Turn up the heat to high and add another generous glug of olive oil. Add bread crumbs and cook until toasted and crispy, about 1 minute. Add to pasta bowl along with Parmesan and fresh herbs.

POPSAirbrushing to cover the bones It's hard to be that thin without your bones showing, or your skin being sallow, or your hair being limp. What to do... what to do... just fix it in post-production. Are you listening, 13-year-old girls? This look is unattainable. It is not possible to have these dimensions and look healthy.

POPSWhat isn't wrong with you? How about a list of things we like about other Clippers? I'll start and feel free to join in. Try not to say anything nasty about someone. There are plenty of clips for that.

POPSMi caja mágica (My Magic Box) What would you keep in your magic box? I would keep the sound of my daughter's first laugh and the smell of her neck, the taste of the first lemon my tree produced, and the memories of my first time playing at the ocean and in the snow.

POPSA mother's superpower: I'll fix it "The baby might redistribute your make up, wreak havoc on your schedule, obliterate more than one meal time, declare holy war on your wardrobe, end up canceling at least 50 percent of your social engagements, and grab a few fistfuls of hair while he’s at it " but he will also set you free." POPSFather reads to his child 3218 nights in a row Mr. Brozina, a single father and an elementary school librarian who reads aloud for a living, did not want the same thing to happen with his younger daughter, Kristen. So when she hit fourth grade, he proposed The Streak: to see if they could read together for 100 straight bedtimes without missing once. When The Streak reached 100, they celebrated with a pancake breakfast, and Kristen whispered, “I think we should try for 1,000 nights.” Mr. Brozina was delighted, but what he was thinking was, a thousand nights?! “I thought, we’ll never do it,” he recalled. “And then we got to 1,000, and we said, ‘How can we stop?’ ” For 3,218 nights (and some mornings, if Mr. Brozina was coming home too late to read), The Streak went on.
