    God or Darwin? some statistics...
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  7-4-2009    5
though i used the same headline as the article, i do not agree to it. Evolution is not equal to religion and they are merely two different perspectives of the same reality. Each one portrays a different worldview, a different world, a different view. the direction in religion is one of preservation, maintaining the existing order as it , whilst in evolution the dynamics are in constant motion of exploring new orders which by nature are transitory.

2 interesting concepts that portrait religion and other supernaturalism as stemming: 1) Natural selection- the Darwinist angle. 2) A by-product of the human psychology.

The American Religious Identification Survey made headlines in 2001 when it reported that the number of people with no religious affiliation had increased sharply since 1990, from 8.2 to 14.1 percent. The latest report, released last month, put the number at 15 percent.

Born believers: How your brain creates God
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  2-6-2009    7
the second view is made of two arguments: 1) "common-sense dualism". The body is for physical processes, like eating and moving, while the mind carries our consciousness in a separate - and separable - package. 2)an overdeveloped sense of cause and effect which primes us to see purpose and design everywhere, even where there is none. these two statements combined, lead the way for the invention of god, goddess and the like. Interesting...

"Both women, who refused to give their real names, go online daily to debate religion with fellow atheists -- and the few believers hardy enough to brave their barbs -- from safely behind their computer screens. they also say; "It's easier to say that you're gay than an atheist." Asked what she would be without the Internet, Didi laughed: "I would be a full-closet atheist."

who said that procreation is a must? why is it, that if a person decides not to have a child he/she becomes shallow, hedonist, almost morally unacceptable?

    Rethinking science and religion
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  12-25-2008    2
"But at the same time, we have uncovered profound mysteries - dark matter and dark energy, for example, 95 percent (!) of the cosmic order but of unknown character - and these awaken a tangible sense of humility: We do not know it all. Today, religious people have cause to rejoice. The god of the gaps may be dead, but spiritual life is reinvigorated because God is no longer just the perfunctory explanation for mystery. God is the author of wonder." i think that behind science wonder exists, its parallel in religion is bewilderment.

    God Or Science?
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  12-20-2008    4
It is the human need to know that gave birth to god/religion as an overall description that provides answers. it is that need that gives birth to an alternative worldview, such as science to replace the older theories.

Why religion is outdated, and dangerous.

I find it most disturbing. On the verge of development that will prolong life with less illnesses, and will increase the degrees of freedom and responsibility a so called 'prolife' religious mass is trying to take us back.

    Death to death
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  11-2-2008    1
"The technological singularity has been called the Geek Rapture or Rapture of the Nerds, referring to the belief held by some Christians that they will be taken up bodily into heaven to be with Jesus before the Day of Judgment." is it so? "Even for those who believe that they don't believe in life after death, it seems impossible to stop imagining technological solutions to the problem." Though written very simple, it does point to an interesting riddle.

The study also points out that in today's world religion has no monopoly on kind and generous behaviour. In many findings, non-believers acted as prosocially as believers. The last several hundred years has seen the rise of non-religious institutional mechanisms that include effective policing, courts and social surveillance. Very interesting read, on the social function of god. maybe we can say that JC, Moses and the like are history social workers :)
