Software predicts where El Niño will strike next
    Mohir
    by Mohir  8-5-2008    2
By applying the technique to climate records from 1979 to 2005, the team found that the majority of these links are stable over time, forming a "skeleton" to the world's climate. Yet it's the weaker links, which break and then reform, that are of more interest. Under normal climate conditions this happens only occasionally, but disturbances from an El Niño event cause the links to "blink" on and off every few weeks. The location of the blinking links reveal where the El Niño is having an influence, he says.

    The big Buzz...
    balthazarus
    by balthazarus  7-28-2008    4
It won't, though, be as complete as Google. While Google has had failures in extending its brand (Froogle, Google Base), its collection of services that are affiliated with its mainstream search product, like Google Maps, Image Search, and desktop search, can make switching away from Google difficult for users. Costello realizes that Cuil needs to layer in additional services, but as he said to me, the company has to start somewhere. Upshot: Cuil is certainly worth trying out. try it on: http://www.cuil.com/

Although there are a few different standards for highlighting links like these, most social networking sites, blog software and hosting services support one or more. They're relying on site builders to highlight such links by using special markup. Google uses this information to build a graph of all sites and their links to one another. Rather than request the API from each site individually (Twitter followers, MySpace friends, etc.), Google provides a single RESTful API to send a simple query in one shot. While there are limits to this data (Facebook info is currently not available in this widget), the information we're getting is real and the friend information we're getting isn't a simple number but a list of live URLs that Google has vetted for us.
