Hope for Tiger Breeding
asphere
by asphere  4-28-2008
" They found that 49 of the 105 captive tigers, or about 47 percent, could be categorized as being of one of five subspecies. Since some of the 49 were from breeding programs, the researchers suggest that the percentage of purebreds in the full captive population is probably lower, about 14 percent to 23 percent. Still, that represents a new pool of genetically distinct tigers potentially available for breeding efforts. " new pool ! great news :)

Stand with Tibet - Support the Dalai Lama
asphere
by asphere  3-22-2008    3
" China's economy is totally dependent on "Made in China" exports that we all buy, and the government is keen to make the Olympics in Beijing this summer a celebration of a new China, respected as a leading world power. China is also a very diverse country with a brutal past and has reason to be concerned about its stability -- some of Tibet's rioters killed innocent people. But President Hu must recognize that the greatest danger to Chinese stability and development comes from hardliners who advocate escalating repression, not from Tibetans who seek dialogue and reform. by asphere  1-14-2008
more in the article : " In the United States, Zetia and Vytorin combined account for about 20 percent of the overall cholesterol-lowering market. More than 100 million prescriptions have been filled in the United States for Zetia and Vytorin since the Food and Drug Administration approved them in November 2002 and August 2004 respectively. Both drugs cost about $3 a day. "

Love At First ... Smell

by asphere  1-8-2008
more from this article : "Since sticklebacks use the same molecules to communicate information about their immune system as other vertebrates, this experiment can be assumed to be important for many animals, including humans. Humans have used perfumes for thousands of years. However, it seems that our choice of perfume should depend on our MHC genes. Perhaps these results explain why some perfumes smell good on some people and terrible on others."

Wearing Too Much Perfume May Indicate Depression
asphere
by asphere  1-8-2008    1
more in the article : The implications are wide and can be applied to the general population, says Prof. Shoenfeld. “People who are depressed seem to respond well to aromatherapy. Certain smells seem to help them overcome the effects of the biological factors, suggesting that depression may have a biological cause.
