    George Washington's Rules of Civility
    Kore7
    by Kore7  2-17-2007    4
Insightful precepts of civil social behavior; as applicable now as ever. As a young schoolboy in Virginia, George Washington took his first steps toward greatness by copying out by hand a list of 110 ' Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation .' Based on a 16th-century set of precepts compiled for young gentlemen by Jesuit instructors, the Rules of Civility were one of the earliest and most powerful forces to shape America's first president.... Most of the rules are concerned with details of etiquette, offering pointers on such issues as how to dress, walk, eat in public and address one's superiors. But in the introduction to the newly published Rules of Civility: The 110 Precepts That Guided Our First President in War and Peace , Brookhiser warns against dismissing the maxims as "mere" etiquette. "The rules address moral issues, but they address them indirectly," writes. "They seek to form the inner man (or boy) by shaping the outer."

" one study collected both reflex tears and emotional tears (after peeling an onion and watching a sad movie, respectively). When scientists analyzed the content of the tears, they found each type was very different. Reflex tears are generally found to be about 98 percent water, whereas several chemicals are commonly present in emotional tears First is a protein called prolactin, which is also known to control breast milk production. Adrenocorticotropic hormones are also common and indicate high stress levels. The other chemical found in emotional tears is leucine-enkephalin, an endorphin that reduces pain and works to improve mood. Of course".

The Role of Light on Human Health
    Mohir
    by Mohir  7-16-2008
Rea envisions "real-time light prescriptions" to help people receive or avoid light at the appropriate times. Simple measures to control when and how much circadian light we receive could help nightshift workers stay alert on the job and sleep more effectively during the day, help cure jet lag, decrease depression, and generally help everyone get a proper night's sleep. The ability to modify circadian rhythm could potentially mitigate the negative health effects that some researchers believe are brought on by disruptions to the light-dark cycle. Recent studies have found a link between health and changes in the natural circadian rhythm. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a series of articles, for example, that showed night shift workers had a higher incidence of breast cancer; and, last year, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer cited night work as a potential breast cancer risk factor.

Children taken away because of a breastfeeding photo in Texas
    Johanna_G
    by Johanna_G  6-14-2007    17
The excerpt above is taken from "Oxytocin and breastfeeding - does this hormone make breastfeeding a sexual act?" on http://www.007b.com/breastfeeding_sexual.php I'd like to call attention to the central issue, that, as I suppose, is given in this quotation: "My sister couldn't breastfeed because it felt good. She thought, if it felt good with her baby it must be a sin ...." (Loco citato.) In my humble opinion, it is rather a capital sin to plant such a superstitious crap of false, hostile, self-destructive morality in girls and women.

Breastfeeding could save 1.3 million child lives
    Aribeth
    by Aribeth  8-1-2009
Raising to 90 percent the global breastfeeding rate for infants to six months would save an estimated 13 percent of the 10 million under-age-5 deaths a year, Vallenas said. In a statement released to mark World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said it was also important that mothers in disaster zones be given the support they need to continue or restart breastfeeding. "During emergencies, unsolicited or uncontrolled donations of breast milk substitutes may undermine breastfeeding and should be avoided," Chan said, arguing abandoning breastfeeding could put vulnerable child lives at extra risk. "The focus should be on active protection and support of breastfeeding."

more: Kleb's team spent six months deciding on the most perfect female ears, before finally choosing those of Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie as the best in the world. The lovely Lindsay Lohan was selected as having the most perfect nose, while Bernice's golden-blonde hair came from Jennifer Aniston. The hypothetical super-beauty's cheeks are based on those of Halle Berry. "Halle's surname is Berry, but her cheeks are like two lovely ripe apples," quipped Kleb. And for a mouth? "There we went old school," said Kleb. "Our analysis showed that the most perfect mouth belonged to none other than Marilyn Monroe." The final composite, pictured below, has now been revealed to the public for the first time. The McGill team will continue their work, to give Bernice a body that will match her beautiful face. "I can't say too much," said Kleb, "but I will tell you that the left breast belongs to Scarlett Johansson.
