POPSGod-Drunk vs. Godless From the Atlantic Monthly's article "The American Idea" - Scholars, novelists, politicians, artists, and others look ahead to the future of the American idea. I thought the juxtaposition of these two pieces in particular was interesting. Sam Harris is the author of The End of Faith (2004) and Letter to a Christian Nation (2006). Tim LaHaye is a minister and the author of more than 50 books, including the best-selling Left Behind series. I have clipped both pieces below because Atlantic Monthly won't let you view the entire article.

POPSCandidate Calculator Well, there are no little fun heads to watch go up... Mostly I was just surprised some of these are actually considered "issues" in the USA.

POPSPlay the Candidate Match Game! A multiple choice quiz to help you determine which candidate you should vote for as president? K, I probably only can name 3 those candidates, that election is almost a year away (!!!), multiple choice quizzes are always so over simplified its ridiculous, and I'm not allowed to vote anyways... but watching the little heads go up and down was fun! Click to USA Today and Play the Candidate Match Game.

POPSWhen does waterboarding become just? Part of a statement by Malcolm Wrightson Nance, former member of the U.S. military intelligence community, prepared for his testimony at a hearing of the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties on Thursday, Nov. 8. Another excerpt: But, does the ultimate goal of protecting America require us to adopt policies that shift our mindset from righteousness and self-defense to covert cruelty? Does protecting America "at all costs" mean sacrificing the Constitution, our laws and the Bill of Rights in order to save it? I do not believe that. The attacks of September 11 were horrific, but they did not give us the right to destroy our moral fabric as a nation or to reverse a course that for two hundred years led the world towards democracy, prosperity and guaranteed the rights of billions to live in peace.

POPSSmoke a Pack a Day... or move to Cairo This comes as no surprise to me. The entire time I was in Cairo I coughed, hacked and eye watered my way through each day. I asked my chain smoking friend why he bothered to smoke when he could just breathe the air. Worst pollution I personally have ever had to live through. Luckily enough I was able to escape by heading home, unlike most everyone else stuck there.

POPSChristian-right to form third party if Guiliani nominated? I suppose this would be a boon to the Democrates? A similar occurance happened in Canada when the wackier elements of the PC party broke off to create the Reform Party, giving Liberals rule of Canada for almost two decades. But then Canada has many splinter parties dividing up the votes in weird ways including the NDP (left), Bloc Quebecois (intent on actually breaking up the country), Greens (growing in support), as well as the much missed Rhinoceros Party of Canada .
