In non-familial, sporadic cases, advancing paternal age is associated with an increased risk of genetic diseases for the offspring. Many diabetics have an older father and no family history of diabetes 1. In famiilial cases paternal age is not usually advanced. The child that is autistic may be the first child of a young father.
