The Saddest Sad Songs Of All Time!
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-8-2008    33
I picked a few of my favourites. See the list and lyrics at the site. I couldn't get through life without music as a backdrop. Where would we be without it? If you need a rest from politics, just copy/paste a title and go youtubing . Even sad songs can make you happy. I heard this song when I was a little girl and my Dad told me it was about a dog (that probably drowned) and I bawled my eyes out! I still do! :D   Anyway, remember. Jumping off cliffs not allowed! . ;) Clip Song (Not sad, even!)

El Sistema: Changing Lives Through Music

This is something I really believe in & have been working hard at the last few years in the area where I live. I think its absolutely tragic that millions of kids in our country have no musical education or training.

We Feel Like The Ghost, Not The Machine
debbyski

" But it's time to bring experience back. Neuroscience has effectively investigated the sound waves, but it has missed the music. Although reductionism has its uses -- it is, for instance, absolutely crucial for helping us develop new pharmaceutical treatments for mental illnesses -- its limitations are too significant to allow us to answer our biggest questions. As the novelist Richard Powers wrote, "If we knew the world only through synapses, how could we know the synapse? Virginia Woolf, for example, famously declared that the task of the novelist is to "examine for a moment an ordinary mind on an ordinary day ... the pattern, however disconnected and incoherent in appearance, which each sight or incident scores upon the consciousness." In other words, she wanted to describe the mind from the inside, to distill the details of our psychological experience into prose. That's why her novels have endured: because they feel true. And they feel true because they capture a l

Music for the Brain
Rasmus
by Rasmus  11-28-2007
Some people say that art and music are an impractical luxury for schools, given the hyper competitive demands of "globalization" that require a strong background in science and math. Laying aside the wrong-headed workforce-training assumptions behind such an instrumentalist educational philosophy, another way of looking at it is: given the "new economic" reality -- where workers won't have long-term jobs or careers but multiple jobs and careers -- the advantage goes to those with nimble minds and creative intelligence; not the proficient test-takers our education factories are producing. Improving the achievement gap? Raising test scores? Preventing kids from dropping out? We need more music education, not less. The math is simple.

A Pitch For Music

Can you believe that many schools still don't have a music program in spite of all the scientific evidence that shows it is necessary to our wholeness?

Appeal to All Americans-Support the Arts
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  6-26-2007
For all Americans concerned about the quality of education in general, & of arts education in particular (dance, visual arts, music, theatre) I'd encourage you to support the following principles espoused by these educators. Statistics show that nations who have the arts & especially music at the core of their curriculum are doing a whole lot better in their academic achievement than those who don't. It's really sad to me that some in authority have removed the arts from the curriculum when just a little investigation into history reveals the ancients & most if not all great ancient cultures saw all science & art interwoven & needed for a well rounded education.

Music Instruction Increases Math & Reading Scores
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  6-26-2007
Another case for the need to put music & its concepts at the core of education. Music, math & I'll be so bold to assert numerology are languages inextricably connected to one another. Here's a quote by one mathematician regarding this statement, "Music is a secret arithmetical exercise and the person that indulges in it does not realize that he is manipulating numbers."- G Leibnitz

The Origins of Music
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  5-10-2007    1
An absolutely enlightening recorded lecture on why music affects us the way it does & how it is conveyed. I don't think I've ever read an article on the origins of music more fascinating than this. I guarantee you will not be disappointed in taking the time to read this short lecture by Rudolf Steiner. I'm a musician/singer/songwriter & through my life a question I've often been asked is, "Where do you get your ideas?" If you've asked this question too, please read this lecture. If you find it resonates with you'll know what to do next & "That's what it's all about!"
