People thought that paper could not be folded in half more than 8 times. They just weren't thinking about it the right way. (There is bound to be text on the page, but my plugins are playing up, so I couldn't see where it was. I thought the picture said enough.)

The Music Of Nature
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-4-2007    13
The music of nature. Just hit the site to listen to a beautiful symphony of cricket songs. I just love sitting outside on the porch at night, enjoying a beer and some good company and listening to the symphonies and dramas of the insect world. Crickets (though they are somewhat creepy littte bugs to me) have one of the most relaxing sounds I know.... next to the sound of a beer being opened, that is. *LOL* ;)

God Is the Machine---0 then 1
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  8-15-2007    5
There are many ways to view God & any sober member of AA realizes that some concept of God/Power greater than themselves is necessary to their recovery & part of the 12 Steps. 2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. 5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. 6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. 12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Music Instruction Increases Math & Reading Scores
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  6-26-2007
Another case for the need to put music & its concepts at the core of education. Music, math & I'll be so bold to assert numerology are languages inextricably connected to one another. Here's a quote by one mathematician regarding this statement, "Music is a secret arithmetical exercise and the person that indulges in it does not realize that he is manipulating numbers."- G Leibnitz

No Concept of Numbers & Counting Linked to Thought
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  6-25-2007
I couldn't help but wonder if this separatist type of thinking affects mathematical intelligence(Maybe others such as music) to some degree. For ex-Is there or has there been any research to show that when one views them self as better, less than or the same as a change in their mathematical intelligence occurs. Or how about religious groups, nations, etc. Anyway some food for thought & would like some feedback. Thanks.

Researcher Links Storytelling, Math Ability
haraya
by haraya  6-24-2007    3
This study suggests that building strong storytelling skills early in the preschool years may be helpful in preparing children for learning mathematics when they enter school. ''It is also a nice finding, I think, because storytelling is something every parent can easily do and foster with their children, without the need to buy any fancy toys or materials,'' said O'Neill. Given these findings, O'Neill is continuing in further studies, also funded by Science and Engineering Research Canada, to explore more precisely what aspects of storytelling are linked to aspects of mathematical ability.

Numerology For Accountants
allenmarkowski
by allenmarkowski  5-10-2007    10
I'm a numerologist & was blown away when a search on "numerology" brought up this title & found there was a law, "Benford's Law" that outlines a pattern of the distribution of numbers. Numerology is a study in the science of vibration, patterns & proportion. It looks at numbers/letters not just as things but symbols/icons that represent qualities/attributes. Numerology has been looked upon as a psuedoscience & I believe this is just the beginning of how this science can be applied to our lives & help to make this world a better place. I'm dedicated to revealing more about this wonderful science as I have the time. If you find articles/subjects along these lines please e-mail me. Thanks!

Good video re:geometry & code & understanding the meaning of the unit of one as it is illustrated with a circle & square. Opposites creating something new, a triangle which changes proportionately with the increase/decrease of the one square & circle. In summary 1 square + 1 circle=1 triangle that is a product of the two.

Math Behind Ancient Islamic Tile Patterns Decoded
Kore7
by Kore7  2-24-2007    6
When Peter J. Lu traveled to Uzbekistan, he had no idea of the mathematical journey that he was about to embark on as well. See the full research article as published in Science . It's a wonderful example of original, multidisciplinary academic research bridging history and mathematics that happens to force us to re-think the sophistication of ancient geometrical knowledge. When Lu looked at photographs of Islamic buildings, he found that he could break the patterns on their surfaces up into the same shapes, even though the shapes often weren't immediately visible. "I couldn't sleep for days," he said. "I skipped Christmas break to work on it."

The Exanding Mathematical Universe of Spidrons
Kore7
by Kore7  10-22-2006    3
A field of triangles crumples and twists into a wavy crystalline sea. A crystal ball sprouts spiraling, labyrinthine passages. Faceted bricks stack snugly into a tidy, compact structure. Underlying each of these objects is a remarkable geometric shape made up of a sequence of triangles—a spiral polygon that resembles a seahorse's tail. The result is beautiful to behold.

The Number Spiral
Kore7
by Kore7  8-20-2006    1
It looks as though primes tend to concentrate in certain curves that swoop away to the northwest and southwest, like the curve marked by the blue arrow. (The numbers on that curve are of the form x ( x +1) + 41, the famous prime-generating formula discovered by Euler in 1774.) Some clips from a wonderfully-done exploration of this curious mathematical construct (also known as the Ulam Spiral ). To date, it is not fully understood exactly why more primes tend to fall along certain "curves" in the spiral than others, but the elusive quest for a simple prime-generating formula keeps the deceptively-simple spiral intriguing to number theorists.
