      12. Don’t Chimp Chimping is when a photographer “Oohs” and “Aaah” while looking at images on their LCD screen. If you’re photographing something don’t get caught up in the self-gratification of reviewing your photos. Check to make sure your settings are ok, but keep your eye on your subject and remember #11.

Only the Creepiest Photo Ever Taken
    alanocu
    by alanocu  5-6-2008    12
"These photographs were a common aspect of American culture, a part of the mourning process. Surviving families were proud of these images and hung them in their homes, sent copies to friends and relatives, wore them as lockets or carried them as pocket mirrors. Nineteenth-century Americans knew how to respond to these images. Today there is no culturally normative response to postmortem photographs."

1941 National Park Service Photo Mural
    alanocu
    by alanocu  5-1-2008    4
"In 1941 the National Park Service commissioned noted photographer Ansel Adams to create a photo mural for the Department of the Interior Building in Washington, DC. The theme was to be nature as exemplified and protected in the U.S. National Parks. The project was halted because of World War II and never resumed." I included the entire set, so the clip is REALLY long. - you may want to view when you have more time. At the source page, you can download any of these photos in much higher resolution. I scaled them all to 500 px wide for the clipmark.

The History of Color In Photography
    alanocu
    by alanocu  5-1-2008    2
Important Dates in Photography: 1850: Levi Hill claims to invent color photography, though his claims were highly contested 1861: Scottish physicist James Clerk-Maxwell demonstrates a color photography system involving three black and white photographs, each taken through a red, green, or blue filter. The photos were turned into lantern slides and projected in registration with the same color filters. This is the “color separation” method. 1868: Ducas de Hauron publishes a book proposing a variety of methods for color photography. 1877: Louis Ducos du Hauron experiments with subtractive color 1906: Availability of panchromatic black and white film and therefore high quality color separation color photography. J.P. Morgan finances Edward Curtis to document the traditional culture of the North American Indian. 1907: First commercial color film, the Autochrome plates, manufactured by Lumiere brothers in France
