POPSGOP Says They Won't Be Able to Block Obama Budget I'd say this gives the GOP free reign to go full-on crazy in their opposition to the budget. No matter what they do, it's going to pass. The initial (albeit admittedly uninformed) reaction to Obama's budget is largely positive , so Republicans will be freed up to play to their base -- who have a 63% negative reaction to the proposed budget. (h/t to Political Wire .)

POPSMcCain Begins Robo-Call Smear Campaign It looks like Team McCain didn't expect the Ayers attack to fall as flat as it did last night. In a follow-up to what they seem to have expected to be a terrible blow, they've started a new robo-call campaign. I got one of these this morning and it sounds as desperate as it reads. That's right, they're blowing money on this in Madison, WI -- liberal central. Not only are they desperate, but they aren't very smart. They have a clip at the link:

POPSRNC Gives Up on Wisconsin, Maine Does this mean I don't have to hear "OBAMA SUCKS!" every five minutes on the teevee machine? Sadly, no. While a pullout from Wisconsin is a significant strategic move, it does not represent a full GOP retreat from the state. McCain's campaign has notified Wisconsin stations that it planned to continue to buy air time through Oct. 26. At least it will be a peaceful Halloween...

POPSMcCain Puts His Chips on PA, WI, and MN The problem with this strategy is that it's insane. Minnesota, for example, is so far from competitive that Politico's swing state map doesn't even list it anymore. I went to Electoral-Vote.com and got these numbers -- McCain is the lower number in each case: Minnesota - 54%-43% Pennsylvania - 50%-43% Wisconsin - 49%-43% Maybe PA and WI make sense, but MN? Seriously, I don't see the reasoning.

POPSPoll: Obama Leads Wisconsin This one's a little personal. If I see one more electoral map that shows the Badger state as a toss-up, I'm going to hurt someone. Wisconsin isn't going McCain, it hasn't gone GOP since the Reagan landslide. Other fun results; Bush is really unpopular here -- only a 15% job approval rating. More evidence that McCain's done here. He's still spending money here, though. You can't watch TV for an hour without seeing a McCain ad. Glad to see him blowing that cash on a lost cause.

POPSHard-Hitting Ad Takes on McCain's Dishonesty Ouch! This is what we need to see. Generally, it's a bad idea to accuse your opponent of out-and-out lying -- even if that's exactly what's happening. But McCain's campaign has gotten so bad that Obama's able to quote the press. He's not making the accusation, he's just bringing it to your attention. After a despicable campaign, McCain takes the beating he deserves. I can vouch for this airing in Wisconsin -- saw it tonight.

POPSWisconsin Group Wants Married Gays Imprisoned This gives you an idea of how stupid these people are. In my piece Played Out , I argued that this sort of action would wind up with the law being struck down and, perhaps, even the amendment being reconsidered. Send someone to prison for this and people will see just how unjust the whole thing is. The problem with the religious right is that they have themselves convinced that people don't think they're crazy. As a result, they say crazy-assed stuff like this all the time.

POPSRNC Energy Ad False Annenberg points out that Obama has an entire webpage devoted to energy proposals, including "a 10-year, $150 billion spending plan that would go toward clean coal technology; further development of plug-in hybrid cars; and commercialization of wind, solar and other renewable fuels." "The RNC and McCain may not like all of Obama's ideas, just as Obama may not support all of McCain’s, but that doesn’t mean that they don't exist," says Fact Check.

POPSSwing State? Wisconsin has been considered a swing state for this election. This suggests it's probably not so. With the electoral map already favoring Obama, this can't be the best news Team McCain's seen all day. Margin of error +/- 4.5.

POPSMcCain's Ground Game Lacking? While I don't agree that McCain's "in a good position to be the first Republican to win Wisconsin since Ronald Reagan," the rest seems pretty solid and shows that Team McCain is letting grass grow under their feet. A bad idea. Although the two candidates weren't running against each other in the primary, the numbers suggest McCain's support among cheeseheads is weak. NYT reported that Obama got 646,851 votes in Wisconsin, while McCain only scored 224,755.

POPSA Real Dick For some people, Jesus is a real prick. What was the lawsuit over? Donohoo filed a defamation lawsuit over a 2003 press release that he argued defamed his client, the Rev. Grant Storms. Storms gave a speech the same year at the "International Conference on Homo-Fascism" in Milwaukee where, according to a recording, he told gay rights opponents that the failure of petitions and lobbying meant they should "start taking it to the streets." Storms then mimicked gunshot sounds and said "There's twenty! Ca-ching, glory, glory to God, let's go drive through the McDonald's and come back to get the rest." Fair Wisconsin accused Storms of advocating murder - mostly because he was - and Storms got Donohoo to sue for defamation.

POPSWhat if Obama Really Were a Muslim? The Wisconsin State Journal's Ajuman Ali takes on the idea that lying about Obama's faith represents a 'smear.' The idea that a Muslim isn't fit for the presidency is bigoted and stupid -- and it's an idea that all the candidates should attack.
