POPSIs smoking a character issue ? I think quitting smoking many, many moons ago was crucial to my intellectual, spiritual, and ethical development. Is smoking a character lapse and a sign of immense weakness, given the dangers to himself and others? After all, the children of smokers are more likely to become smokers. Should we expect his love, concern and care of the country to be any more than the display of love, concern and care for his own children? I wonder.

POPSThomas Morton ( 1564-1659 ) "Going once more to New England, he was imprisoned (1644–45) in Boston. Later he moved to Maine, where he died. His book, New English Canaan (1637, repr. 1883 with notes by Charles Francis Adams, 1835–1915), gives a bitter, satiric view of New England. "... ..."1637, New English Canaan. After his second deportation back to England, colonist, trader, and writer Morton, representing the Anglican and anti-Puritan faction, provides a description of New England, its topography, settlements, and Indians, as well as a satirical account of the Plymouth colonists' attack on Morton's colony at Merry Mount. Myles Standish, the Pilgrim leader, is depicted as Captain Shrimp. The work is regarded as one of the earliest examples of American humor."... ..."He gained a considerable reputation as a Protestant controversialist, and published numerous works against Roman Catholicism, chief among them being the Apologia catholica (1605) and A Catholicke Appeale (1609)."

POPSOrwell's Children Too many of us... have become just like the denizens of Jonestown: Orwell's children -- enraged into constant militancy against eternal enemies, oblivious to the notion of a Blessed Creator, melded into the consciousness of the party hive, divorced from history, hypnotized by images, inoculated against reason, stripped of family, and existing only to serve the cause. There were specific elements necessary for nations with a heritage of freedom to slide intoabject slavery..... What are the characteristics of the Orwellian state? 1. Start with God. He must go. 2. Truth must go too. 3. Language must be brought to heel. Marxism foisted upon us words like "capitalism," which means nothing at all but which has so infected our minds that we reflexively use this silly nonsense word instead of freedom. Politically correct language is rampant. Image and symbols replace words.

POPSObama will push for 8 team playoff 'I’m going to throw my weight around. I think it’s the right thing to do'. Wow. I hope if he can get around to it, he will do something about those pesky dry cleaners ruining our cloths. Reality TV is a nuisance too. I also want a new puppy.

POPSMaterialists in catch-22 Note that "classroom banter" now qualifies as grounds for a federal civil-rights lawsuit, whereas soliciting oral sex from interns in the Oval Office -- hey, what kind of right-wing prude would object to that? Sexual harassment law does not prevent professors or anyone else from using positions of power to obtain sexual favors. That happens every day. What it does is punish the unattractive and awkward -- those who fail in the pursuit of seduction -- whereas the attractive and charming succeed, and are cagey enough to avoid legal entanglements. There are probably oboe professors who are getting all the undergrad action they can handle, but they are the cute and clever ones. It is only the clumsy rejects who get accused of harassment. If Title VII abolished one sort of inequality, it institutionalized another. And remember: Equality is for Ugly Losers!

POPSLet Them Go their Way "Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand" I see the election of Obama as a huge positive on many levels. I can remember being bewildered a few years back when Dems suggested a hard turn to the left. They were right and I was certainly wrong about the success of this tactic. In retrospect, it makes a lot of sense. They basically followed the Reagan model and even picked up part of his mantra. Maybe, just maybe, we are seeing the beginnings of a new 2 party system in America, where the right will shed off it's progressive dead weight, as it did for most of the past 30 years. We have truth. The Left has NEVER improved an economy anywhere on Earth and never will. Their aim is artificial equality, not growing an economy. Artificial equality, fascism, always comes at the expense of liberty.
