POPSSync your contacts lists offline I am primarily a Firefox and GMail user. Here's another great little app that I think I must try. Sure, I have Excel, but it doesn't sync my contacts for me. Besides, I like the idea of having a copy safely on my hard drive.

POPSAnd one program to open them all. . . for free! On this blog page, you will find links and instructions to get this software for free - all legally! The big feature of this utility is the Preview Pane that will preview images, documents, HTML and even audio files. In the case of documents, the whole file is located instantly into the preview pane so that you can browse through the contents. You can also print the file directly from the preview pane, and copy selected text to the clipboard. Explorer View brings up the standard viewing buttons for image preview such as flip and zoom. Audio files bring up a set of standard player buttons. This means that you can conveniently check a text file without having to load up Word, or organise your music collection without the need to start your player. It’s the simplest, safest and quickest file viewer you can ever use!

POPSFind your misplaced cell phone Where's My Cell Phone is a handy new online application to help find misplaced mobile The service is actually low-tech: it simply redials whatever number you enter and you follow the ring until you've found your beloved handset, answer the call, and turn it off. The service is U.S. only for now. In theory it could be used to annoy your friends to no end, although when you pick up you're given the option to take your number off the list permanently. The creators also claim your number is never saved or kept tracked. This is a good thing and a bad thing, as taking your name off the list means you can never use it again, so be careful when you answer that found phone.

This is a "no hassle," no spam registration from which you may also elect to receive the excellent TechRepublic newsletter. POPSScreen Recording software for free The free download is for version 3.1.3. The current version, Camtasia Studio v5, retails for $299. This software is used to create little movies of what is happening on your screen, typically for software demonstration or training purposes. With the download, you get an offer to upgrade to v5 for half price. Below this article, on the same Ghacks page, you will also find a link to get an older version of SnagIt for free. Made by the same company, Snagit snaps still pictures of all or part of your screen and includes an editor with which you can add text, highlighting, arrows, and more to your image. Another great tool for educators, software developers, or just people who want to save pictures from the Internet and add text "bubbles."

POPSCopy color palettes from old masters to your own photos Someone asked in a forum: "within the last 6 months or so, I came across a program (freeware) which claimed to let you make any of your images have the "look" of another image. In particular, if you had an image of say a Rembrandt painting, you could copy that look to one of your own images. No doubt photoshop experts can do that sort of thing, but I haven't got photoshop." The forum replies included a link to a great Photoshop tutorial and a image editing plug-in called Matrix ( panix.com ) that works with Irfanview and Paint Shop Pro.
