You can't judge this book by its cover!
Torley
by Torley  11-5-2006    3
Caught this over @ Guy Kawasaki's blog. The title is punchy and gets right to the point; I'm clipping this at the encouragement of my girlfriend, and also because it goes hand-in-hand with the positive "be a nicer person" clips I've been seeing around. I haven't read this book, but Guy's blog entry about it sure is valuable. Read and laugh... at your own peril! :)

PopURLs ( http://popurls.com ) is fundamentally a meta-meta-aggregator, aggregating the aggregators! Saving time by delivering the headlines... and photos and videos too. Of course our cozy Clipmarks is on the list, which I hope is bringing us incoming traffic and curious new clippers! =D GET YOUR CLIP ON!

Will There Be Cities in a Virtual World?
Torley
by Torley  1-13-2007
Always cool to see predictions that've come true. Some 6+ years later after this was published, we know now what's happened. And the answer, looking at the specific instance of Second Life, is yes. :) P.S. Not the first time either, as pioneering, earlier online worlds like Habitat have demonstrated. Odd how this article is heavy on the words but misses out the key concept of an "avatar" as digital persona.

Roo Reynolds, Metaverse Evangelist

by Torley  11-4-2006    4
I like job titles that make you do a double-take. I recently spotted this in the Beeb online. These types of articles are becoming more common; I can't imagine it's too long before the novelty wears off and they become ubiquitously meshed yet valuable, like what Steve Jobs thinks of Levi jeans. ;) From an insider perspective (I work for Linden Lab), I should note how dapper Roo aka Algernon looks, and how unique his head is shaped: you'll often not find prominent eyebrows like that in Second Life, especially paired with big blue eyes and a teardrop-shaped head not unlike that of a classic Gray alien. Lots of room for avatar customization, that's for sure.

Menno Ophelia, a Resident of Second Life, made this inspired tribute to one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands of all time. His Flickr photostream also has tributes to Nirvana and Kraftwerk. This particular shot was taken in the famous region of Midnight City. Makes me think about how John Lennon might have used a computer to make music.

This is one of my fave classified ads of all time — I think I first saw it on Jay Leno. Shortly thereafter, I spotted it in numerous places 'round the Net. It's been going around for awhile, but always a goodie if you haven't seen it yet. I wonder if it refers to hunting dinosaurs...

Ever wonder why some websites are so narrow?
Torley
by Torley  11-22-2006    3
I sure did, and I've been getting to know why! This sure clears up a lot: remember, books we read are often taller than they are narrow. Old-skool web text sprawled across widely looks very unnatural and difficult-to-read when you're aware of what *comfortable* conditions are supposed to be. Enlightening study!

I've never ever seen any of these, but it's on my to-do-someday; which is why I'm clipping it! Apparently, I found out the Richie Hawtin video for We(All)Search, which features telekinesis and an unsettling vibe, uses footage from Tarkovsky's Stalker. He's also known for the earlier cinematic adaptation of Solaris.

These Java applets are a lot of fun. There's also some Windows software to download, and more to explore on the site. If only the whole contents were assembled into an adventure, akin to The Castle of Dr. Brain. I may've showcased these goodies before, but it's more than well-worth experiencing them again. And if you've never played with 'em before, GO!

Got too many comments to keep track of? coComment!
Torley
by Torley  11-23-2006    4
I'm really likin' coComment. Before, I had all these bookmarks in a folder to track comments I'd left on sites. It got pretty gnarly (in a bad way). Now, for the most part, I can use coComment. While it doesn't do forums, doesn't recognize some sites like Lifehacker and doesn't seem to work with Clipmarks either (yet!), it *does* work with most blogs and keeps all comment threads tucked on a neat page for future reference. coComment's saved me a lot of time thus far!

SculptyPaint: really fun and easy-to-use sculpted prims maker
Torley
by Torley  7-21-2007
I like how easy it is to save your progress iteratively as you go along; this offers several tools to take a basic primitive and pound it into more twisted forms. While not as elaborate as a full-fledged 3D modeler, SculptyPaint delivers results quickly for the impatient (which is more than I can say for most of the current sculpty-creation methods out there).

I know different individuals and companies have different needs, but staring at this long enough makes your eyes glaze over and your brain rots. Why does the Ultimate version not have Communicator 2007, and for that matter, whatever happened to simplicity? The footnotes only heighten this futile game of playing connect-the-dots.

The process of creating a computer art masterpiece
Torley
by Torley  12-4-2006
Not literally, but figuratively: so often there are great works of art which astound, but most people don't know the laborious process that goes into making them, one step after another. This is one of many great threads at CGSociety, showing how it's done. I have even more appreciation for the artist, Alexander Preuss, after seeing his masterstrokes are carried out.

Ryuichi Sakamoto accompanies himself on piano
Torley

Lovely melodies; this is for the track "Happyend", which was originally a techno-ditty on an early Yellow Magic Orchestra album. Here, on what appears to be a Yamaha Disklavier, Ryuichi plays along with himself. Very emotional, tuneful, and all-out awesome!
