POPS"Scratching Brings Relief" A Very Interesting Question:... "It's possible that scratching may suppress the emotional components of itch and bring about relief?"... (This Is Important To Me): Scratching increased activity in the secondary somatosensory cortex, a pain center, and in the prefrontal cortex, which is linked with compulsive behavior.

POPSTips For Better Memory Here are some ways to boost our ability to remember as we age: 1. Believe in yourself 2. Economize your brain use. 3. Organize your thoughts. 4. Use all your senses. 5. Expand your brain 6. Repeat after me. 7. Space it out. 8. Make a mnemonic. 9. Challenge yourself. 10. Take a course. When you read this clip you can find more information in it to learn how to keep working those habits.

POPSHuman Brain in Silicon - the Beginning "On Intelligence" models the neocortex (the especially human layer) as a remarkably adaptable hierarchy that learns patterns of increasing sophistication using the thalamus as a sequencing clock in a manner reminiscent of computer hardware. The Numenta model is called HTM - Hierarchical Temporal Memory. Free software and tools are available for hacker experimentation.

POPSPacifier For Smarter Babie's?
I think that each parent have the responsibility for their kids health and this includes what they want to teach them, but as parents they have to know what is going on around with all this information that captures their thoughts. For example, evidence of playing a Mozart CD or sitting the baby down in front of Baby Einstein DVD to have smarter babies. "That a baby's first three years are key for brain development is beyond dispute; scientists know that babies' brains change rapidly, growing and pruning synapses. But Mead says a few early childhood advocates have misinterpreted or misused research to suggest that if parents don't sufficiently stimulate children's brains before age 3, they'll do irreparable harm. There is no evidence that the first three years "are a singular window for growth that slams shut once children turn 3," Mead says." But there's no evidence that playing your baby a Mozart CD or sitting her down in front of a Baby Einstein DVD makes a difference, he say

POPSYou Are What You Think Turning back the clock on the ultimate form of self-knowledge is neither possible nor desirable. We can live with the new challenges from brain science. But it will require setting aside childlike intuitions and traditional dogmas, and thinking afresh about what makes people better off and worse off.

POPSThe Importance of CPR This is the reason your CPR card has an expiry date. If you don't stay current and perform an inadequate CPR technique, technically you are liable (although it's unlikely you'd be sued). I renewed my ACLS certificate a few months ago and can confirm the new 30:2 ratio is endorsed by the American Heart Association. Other changes were made to airway obstructions, too. If you want to do CPR I suggest you take a refresher course. (I've personally reanimated hundreds of people and it's nice when it works), but you have to do it properly if you want to give the patient his best chance at living again.

POPSFriendships Keep You Healthy High school and college friends, friends from work, friends from raising children together, from neighborhood committees, from shared vacations -- sure, some of these bonds and friendships fall away as part of the natural cycle of growing and changing, but most women find new friendships to replace them. Women who don't find close friendships, who have trouble keeping up connections, need to make an effort to change those patterns. Hundreds of research studies confirm that isolation hurts us and connection heals us through the same physical mechanisms as exercise and healthy diet. Blood vessels are measurably more elastic, the heart's ability to respond to extraordinary demands is higher, cardiac inflammatory protein levels are lower, and blood pressure response to exercise is better in more connected people. Their stress-hormone blood profiles are also measurably healthier than those of isolated people.

POPSRaging Hormones Of Puberty Dr. Smith and colleagues identified the site on human recombinant alpha4-beta2-delta GABA-A receptors that produced the anxiety response, and were able to mutate the site to prevent the novel effect of the stress hormone. In contrast, neither the receptor nor the necessary conditions exist for this anxiety-producing effect of the stress hormone before puberty, because the expression of the receptor is dependent upon hormonal transitions, such as those that occur at puberty. This new finding of a change in the effect of a stress hormone sheds new light on the "mood swings" of puberty.

POPSLove Is Blind Other hormones, oxytocin and vasopressin, kick in later and appear to be crucial for forming long-term partnerships. Couples who have been together for several years show increased brain activity associated with these chemicals, when they look at pictures of their partner. Oxytocin is produced when couples have sex and touch, kiss and massage each other - the hormone makes us more trusting, helps overcome "social fear" and is important for bonding. Brain scans of people in love show that the old adage "love is blind" really is true. While the dopamine reward areas are excited in love, regions linked with negative emotions and critical social judgement switch off.

POPSTeenagers Existence This goes in favor of our teens... The teenager is a uniquely human phenomenon. According to many recent studies, teen brains really are unique (see interactive graphic). Though many brain areas mature during childhood, others mature later - such as the frontal and parietal lobes, responsible for planning and self-control. Other studies have shown that teens fail to see the consequences of their actions, and that sudden increases in nerve connectivity in teen brains may make it difficult for teenagers to read social situations and other people's emotions.

POPSI'M GAME Certainly there are skeptics who disagree with these researchers and claim that no amount of "mental aerobics" can prevent a decline in one's brain functioning... The writer of this article, Victoria Wesseler is a lifestyle, gardening and culinary writer and a weekly featured columnist. Is good to know how others could "brain exercise"...For me being in clipmarks do the same because I spend hours and not even realize how much time has flown by

POPSScientists Becoming Mind-Readers The question is: How a person has decided to act in the future? The understanding could find use in mind-reading methods under development to enable tetraplegic to move prosthetic limbs and operate computers.

POPSCan You Prevent Alzheimer's Disease? Other actions that you can take to prevent Alzheimer's are less clear...Some research suggests that the benefit of eating vegetables to prevent Alzheimer's is due to the vitamin Econtained in the vegetables themselves or in the oils added in salads...Where does all of his leave us? Even if there's no guarantee you will never develop Alzheimer's disease, exercising regularly and eating more fish and vegetables are certainly sensible prescriptions for maintaining general health....And keeping the brain sharp with mental exercises sounds like lots of fun...So, you don't think that we should keep going for the the best results..
