Why Canada is the best haven from climate change
    Socratoad
    by Socratoad  7-4-2008    3
As might be expected, developed nations score best. Canada is top, followed by Ireland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The United Kingdom is in 12th position, just behind the US. The surprise in the top 20 is Uruguay, which is listed ninth, and the only well-placed nation not to be in the club of countries which are rich, or Western (and usually both).

In a speech last month, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said, "While many are worrying about filling their gas tanks, many others around the world are struggling to fill their stomachs, and it is getting more and more difficult every day ... In just two months, rice prices have skyrocketed to near historical levels, rising by around 75 per cent globally." And it's the same story for other grain The world cannot solve global warming by starving the hundreds of millions of people who are desperately poor. A way must be found both to fight climate change and increase the global food supply. That is why the United Nations has called for a five-year moratorium on biofuel production and urged its members to explore the possibility of deriving biofuels from agricultural waste and nonfood crops. Jean Ziegler, United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, says that using food crops to create biofuels when much of the world can barely afford to eat is "a crime against

The Sea Shepherd Tar Baby Strategy
    papananook
    by papananook  4-25-2008
The next part of the plan was for Captain Watson to not be on the ship so as to remove himself as the excuse for a boarding party because of his Canadian citizenship. The crew were to maintain radio silence and Captain Watson would make controversial statements from shore to goad and manipulate Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn to act rashly and to respond emotionally – which he did. Hearn took the bait and got himself stuck into the Sea Shepherd strategy by doing the one thing we most wanted him to do – we provoked him into sending an armed boarding party illegally onto a foreign ship in international waters. It was brilliant and he fell for it. At the same time he utilized Bre’r Fox’s tar baby strategy, Captain Watson also incorporated Bre’r rabbit’s strategy into a plan that took into account the psychology of Canadian Minister of Fisheries Loyola Hearn and the bizarre regulations of the Canadian government in defending the slaughter of seals. In Canada under the “Seal Pro

Let growth cater to need, not want

"trickle-down economics has been unable to eliminate poverty, they say, and "should be replaced with programs that redistribute income directly." My choice would be for a guaranteed annual income. In addition, they say consumption should be focused less on acquiring private goods, and more on improving public life – with expenditures aimed at services, restoring and enhancing the environment, and refurbishing and expanding infrastructure. Theirs is a prescription for low, possibly even no growth, but also for a comfortable standard of living.'

    Fecal transplants can cure superbug

The ends do justify the means when it comes to C. difficile treatment! :D This is really good news for those suffering from the debilitating bacterial infection that has killed thousands of people in the last few years. "The procedure involves getting a close relative of the patient, such as a sibling, to donate several days-worth of stool. Louie tests the stool for diseases such as hepatitis and HIV and then mixes it with saline to create liquid feces. He then administers the stool to the patient through an enema." "Louie said the technique allows good bacteria from the transplanted stool to reduce the number of C. difficile bacteria in the intestines and to restore normal intestinal function." Don't poo-poo the technique.
