The article reflects our changing habits and our relationship with our environment. I agree completely about the necessity of outdoors, nature, plants, our good ol' earth. Ever been fishing? To a quiet golf course? A hike? How does it rejuvenate you? I am working on making my backyard a kind of restful, naturalist place for me to go and be refreshed.

    The truth about recycling
    gingembre
    by gingembre  6-14-2007    2
Far too much valuable info here to fit in a clip, so go to the source for interesting discussions of the history of recycling, current status, innovations and concerns about what happens to recyclables being shipped to China and other developing nations. China is now the largest importer of recyclable materials in the world! The explanation of how single stream collection of recyclables works is fascinating. I was not aware of all the new technology being employed to sort and separate recyclable materials. The section on the future of recycling discusses the need for product design to take into account recycling of the product materials to create "closed-loop" cycles where there is no waste. Sustainable packaging emphasizes the use of renewable, recycled and non-toxic source materials to benefit the environment and cut costs. Wal-Mart is jumping on this bandwagon. "Waste is really a design flaw."

Biosphere 2 Sold to Home Developer...but read on...
    gingembre
    by gingembre  6-7-2007    1
The University of Arizona may lease the terrarium for large-scale climate experiments. azcentral adds: "Pinal County Supervisor Lionel Ruiz, whose district includes the Biosphere 2 land, said the development will be good for the area but must be approached cautiously and be well-planned. "I don't want to see just a whole bunch of rooftops from Tucson all the way to Oracle," he said. "We want to see sustained communities and some open spaces and wildlife corridors. Like anything else, if they come in with proper plans, it'll make it a plus." I like the way this guy thinks!

Companies working to pare down waste: greener packaging
    gingembre
    by gingembre  5-27-2007    2
Good news from Berry Plastics in Evansville, Indiana, and Wal-Mart. Berry Plastics says that redesigning packaging to reduce bulk is becoming such a trend that they have hired an engineer devoted to repackaging projects. And Wal-Mart plans to use info from their "packaging scorecard" to make decisions on purchasing merchandise, with the goal of creating "zero waste" by recycling, reusing or otherwise breaking down product waste. So the greening of Wal-Mart may provide the financial incentive for companies to reduce their packaging, as they compete with one another for either Wal-Mart's goodwill or for consumer acclaim in their own right. This is just what the environmental movement needs--a push from the consumer product companies and vendors to save money and help the environment at the same time, with plenty of media fanfare to promote their efforts and boost their images. Their bottom line matters most, of course, but now it is tied to benefiting the environment.

Why individual efforts are only part of the solution
    gingembre
    by gingembre  5-27-2007    1
It is discouraging, isn't it?! We all need to do our part, but we need more than individual efforts to protect our environment. Otherwise it's like bailing water out of a rapidly sinking rowboat with a teaspoon. Every little bit helps, but the overall prognosis is bleak.

Tree trade could save planet from global warming
    JICWyllie
    by JICWyllie  5-17-2007    5
If this finding is true, I would pay significant money (voluntary tax?) that would pay people and / or countries not to cut down their forests, as well as to restore and regenerate what they have cut down. If every comfortable middle class family in the world paid $1000 a year into a fund to save the forests, at LOT of money could be generated. And we could then fly to our heart's content ... except that rising fuel costs are going to put air travel out of financial reach for most people. It's a double bonus for the environment, though.
