more in the article : " In the United States, Zetia and Vytorin combined account for about 20 percent of the overall cholesterol-lowering market. More than 100 million prescriptions have been filled in the United States for Zetia and Vytorin since the Food and Drug Administration approved them in November 2002 and August 2004 respectively. Both drugs cost about $3 a day. "

    10 Facts on American Healthcare
    willhelm
    by willhelm  3-26-2009    17
Fact No. 8: Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians. When asked about their own health care instead of the “health care system,” more than half of Americans (51.3 percent) are very satisfied with their health care services, compared to only 41.5 percent of Canadians; a lower proportion of Americans are dissatisfied (6.8 percent) than Canadians (8.5 percent). Fact No. 9: Americans have much better access to important new technologies like medical imaging than patients in Canada or the U.K. Maligned as a waste by economists and policymakers naïve to actual medical practice, an overwhelming majority of leading American physicians identified computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the most important medical innovations for improving patient care during the previous decade. The United States has 34 CT scanners per million Americans, compared to 12 in Canada and eight in Britain. The United States has nearly 27 MRI machine

Plant sterols have been added to common foods like vegetable oil spreads (margarine), mayonnaise, dairy-based drinks, orange juice and snack bars. Foods containing at least 0.4 grams per serving of plant sterols eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8 grams, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.......Note your spread it can be an easy way to increase sterols as by them selves natural food only contains small amounts.....It would take about 100 pounds of fruits, vegetables or nuts to get 2 grams of natural plant sterols

    Best foods for your heart

Spinach can help keep your ticker in top shape thanks to its stores of lutein, folate, potassium, and fiber. Full of fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, a little sprinkling of flaxseed can go a long way for your heart. Top a bowl of oatmeal or whole-grain cereal with a smidgen of ground flaxseed for the ultimate heart-healthy breakfast. Soy Soy may lower cholesterol, and since it is low in saturated fat, it's still a great source of lean protein in a heart-healthy diet.

Pistachios Are Good For Your Heart

I am so glad to hear this because I absolutely LOVE pistachios. I buy the ones from Turkey AKA Antep pistachios. These are the ones I grew up on until California cornered the market. You can still get them from www.nutsonthenet.com. They are distributed by Zenobia. My local drugstore carries them also.

Like "Good", and "Bad" cholesterol, different fats are processed in different ways, and can have positive and negative effects. Learning more about these distinctions is giving us more insight into the human metabolism, and provides clues to prevent, or reduce the incidence of diseases we know too little about, such as diabetes. If we can't find something by direct observation, we can study effects, and associations, in an effort to trace, characteristics which can be then be verified scientifically.

No mention of a healthy diet. One Doctor says it is good young people are taking preventative medicines at an early age. No doubt good for drug companies who want to establish a customer base. Of course a healthy diet makes too much sense. Very little profit is seen in people learning to cook their own meals. It's just so easy to eat ribs, burgers, and fries, then take a pill. Perhaps they should include the medication in fast food 'meals'
