Dr Chris Hiley, head of policy and research at the UK's Prostate Cancer Charity, said "This is a plausible theory." "In the same way the human papillomavirus has been linked to cervical cancer, there is a suggestion that bits of prostate cancer may be related to a sexually transmitted infection earlier in life."

5 Myths About Our Health-Care System
    spirithiker
    by spirithiker  11-24-2008    2
The U.S. is #1 in the amount we spend for health care, but lag far behind Japan, France, Italy, Sweden and Canada. These country's governments pay for the lion's share of health care. We have the best emergency care system in the world. We're doing a better job than most on reducing smoking rates, but our obesity epidemic is out of control, our death rate from prostate cancer is only slightly lower than the United Kingdom's, and in at least one study, American heart attack patients did no better than Swedish patients, even though the Americans got twice as many high-tech treatments. One major part of the problem is that America has the highest level of poverty and income inequality among all rich nations, and poverty affects one's health much more than the limited ministration of a formal health care system. Some very intersting stats about how we compare to other nations can be found at http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-healthcare.htm.

    The Patient Grows Up
    debbyski
    by debbyski  5-19-2009
In middle age, the only certainty is uncertainty. And we hope that whatever small wisdom we’ve gathered can offset the facts that we can no longer run as fast as we once did, that we squint a lot more, that we are vulnerable. On the plus side, though, as the poet Theodore Roethke wrote: “Those who are willing to be vulnerable move among mysteries. When I was young and ill, all I cared about was the result, about scalpels and scars. But in this waltz with prostate cancer, I’ve cared about the process, too. All along, I’ve wanted to know what this cancer could teach me, and I like to think that I’ve gripped it just as hard as it has gripped me. In embracing the cancer and its teachings, I’ve also embraced mysteries that I couldn’t have imagined more than a year ago. And that’s an absolute adventure, too."

Just Say No To Socialized Medicine
    bmeuppls
    by bmeuppls  8-25-2008    14
True, other developed nations may spend less on health care as a percentage of gross domestic product than the United States does — but so does Sudan. Without considering value, such statistical evaluations are worthless. And one of the primary reasons health care costs more in America is that we are a wealthy country that demands the best. And, we’re investing a lot more in medical research. The United States produces over half of the $175 billion in health care technology products purchased globally. In 2004, the federal government funded medical research to the tune of $18.4 billion. By contrast, the European Union — which has a significantly larger population than the United States — allocated funds equal to just $3.7 billion for medical research.
