POPS Scientist develops programme to understand alien languages All human languages have "functional terms" that bracket phrases - words like "if" and "but" in English. According to Dr Elliott, such terms in any language, are separated by up to nine words or characters. This limit on phrase length seems to correspond to the level of human cognition - how much information we are able to process at once. In an alien language, analysing these phrases might make it possible to gauge how clever the authors of the message are. If they are much smarter than us, there would a lot of words packed into the phrases. The programme should also be able to break a language up into crucial words such as nouns and verbs, even though their meaning is unknown.

POPSIt's OK te be depressed sometimes Even though I have benifitted from anti-depressants in the past, I am still very reluctant to start using them again when I'm feeling down. I want to shape my life in a way that teaches me the copingmechanisms to deal with what comes my way. Antidepressants have made me lethargic in the past. I wasn't bothered with negative thoughts as much, but I also rarely experienced positive emotions nor the urge to change my life. As long as it's possible to do without, I will not grab for the pills to ease my mind.

POPSCan ecology gain by the economic losses? Worldwide governments are taking over banks to 'save' the economy. Wallstreet and other trademarkets respond by going up in recordspeed, so there seems to be a happy ending..... I think that there is a way in which this financial crisis could be used in our advantage. If the governments decide: 1.to break down the barriers that are withholding developing countries to trade with the west 2. to only invest in companies that have sustainable policies, there would be huge protests by those that will suffer in the short run. But the real entrepreneurs will find ways to make money in a way that will not only benifit them, but also have profits for the planet as a whole.

POPSWhere are the weed plants Dutch government? Today the weed that was recently seeded at the island in front of our parliament as a protest against the increasing hostility towards these softdrugs, would be harvested to be destroyed. However, no weedplants were found. Could our parlementiaries be responsible for this?

POPSMoney as Both Tool and Drug The reason we're likely to keep making the same mistakes that brought us into this financial crisis, is that we're addicts. Is there another way to desensitize then going coldturkey?

POPSDutch youths convicted of virtual theft The world is struggling with the global food-, financial and energycrisis. In Holland we're dealing with virtual theft. However, I don't think this will end up in a virtual crisis, since the consequences are very real.
