We're all liars
Pooge
by Pooge  1-21-2008    1
Creative lying amuses me, which is why I clipped the portions of this article that I clipped. The point of the article, however, is that we all lie -- probably more than we'd like to admit. The article then goes on to mention two types of lies: self-centered and other centered. I'd have to disagree with this, as I think all lying is ultimately self-centered. But than I hold to the philosophy that everything we do is ultimately self-centered. Anything we do that benefits others we only do because doing so also directly or indirectly benefits ourselves. The lies we tell to "spare others' feelings", we really tell because we don't want to deal with the repercussions of hurting their feelings -- even if the only repercussion is a lingering feeling of guilt for having done so. There was also (at least) one particular type of lie that I noticed wasn't specifically covered in the article: the completely senseless lie that appears to benefit nobody (the keyword here being appears.)

Blue Monday?
Pooge
by Pooge  1-21-2008    1
I'm inclined to agree with what the internet trends indicate. I know for me that the time period from mid-November on through the end of the year is always the most depressing time of the year for me. Damn holidays. As for the things Dr. Arnall points out in his formula, I don't let them get to me much. Sure here in Michigan the weather in January can get nasty, but on the flip side I'm too in awe of nature to view extreme weather conditions as entirely bad. Failed New Year's resolutions? The last New Year's resolution I made was about ten years ago when I resolved to never make another New Year's resolution. That's the only resolution I've ever kept. And as for the debt from holiday spending, an old friend of mine once said "If you're not in debt, you're un-American." There's a sad truth to that... and because of that truth, debt doesn't bother me anymore. The only debts that bother me are the debts owed to me ;-).

Up with the Grups
Pooge
by Pooge  3-8-2008    2
This article's a couple of years old, but I just came across it and, well, as someone who might perhaps fall into the definition of "Grup", I found it interesting. It made me feel "OK" about, at 39, still living a lifestyle reminiscent of my early 20's, while it simultaneously served as yet another reminder of "Gee... I'm almost 40. You mean I'm not supposed to be acting this way anymore?"
