Another reason to buy USA or Organic Food!
NutritionHO15
by NutritionHO15  11-30-2009
Those grapes look so plump and juicy during the months when you can't get California grapes. I have always known that we import food that is grown with chemicals that are banned in the USA. The program in question, would be voluntary, and would use inspections to watch out for infestations of these mites. While this is a step in the right direction, I think that it should be mandatory and widespread. This article reiterates to me that we should be buying food local and in season to our region.

Food-Borne Pathogens
NutritionHO15
by NutritionHO15  11-30-2009
Food-Borne Pathogens are found in many foods, both fresh and prepared. These clips come from an article in the Los Angeles Times which talks about how pathogens from food can cause long lasting medical problems. The illnesses the article touched on were Salmonella, campylobacter, E coli, and listeria monocytogenes. All of these pathogens are serious to our health and with the right food safety precautious and knowledge we can minimize the number of people who are infected by these pathogens each year. Swine Flu in Pig Meat: WHO Concerns
NutritionHO15
by NutritionHO15  5-7-2009
A propos to current events and food safety, many people are in fear that the swine flu is present in pig meat and may be transferred to humans. This is not the same as the aviary flu or mad cow disease. You cannot get swine flu from eating pig meat. Of the 10 million people in Mexico City, why is it only 200 have died? I will believe this to be a real epidemic when millions of people start dying.

E. coli Fast Food Ice Cubes
NutritionHO15
by NutritionHO15  5-4-2009
This article is certainly disturbing. E. coli was found in ice cubes in a number of fast food restaurants by a 12 year old girl. The type of E. coli was the typical bacterial variety. E. Coli O157:H7 is not the typical E Coli that resides the intestines. This type of bacteria causes bloody diarrhea, cramping, dehydration and possibly death. We tend to think of E Coli as residing on meat, but it can be found on vegetables - and in ice. Over 75 million Americans become ill from foodborne illness each year. by Christine
