The mind’s ability to adapt to the changing world
    einbar
    by einbar  1-17-2009
" There’s no point in trying to hack apart the connections between the inside and the outside of the mind. Instead we ought to focus on managing and improving those connections. For instance, we need more powerful ways to filter the information we get online, so that we don’t get a mass case of distractibility. Some people may fear that trying to fine-tune the brain-Internet connection is an impossible task. But if we’ve learned anything since Clark and Chalmers published “The Extended Mind,” it’s not to underestimate the mind’s ability to adapt to the changing world. "

Programmers say the craziest things in their code
    Kore7
    by Kore7  10-14-2006    2
With the new Google Code Search tool suddenly exposing millions of lines of previously obscure code to the public, I decided to try to find the most embarrassing comments possible that are now out in the open for all to see. Even knowing what types of comments developers leave in their code, I was still a bit mortified to find out just what shameful secrets Google has exposed overnight. (And you should see the R-rated examples.) One blogger compared Google Code Search to reading the great "bathroom wall" of programming. Feel dirty? embryo-0.9.0/src/bin/embryo_main.c 3: /* This is ugly code! don't look at it please! i am embarrassed! i need to */ /* cleanit up! */

"Because while we think we're planning for the future by being pragmatic, we forget we also want our lives to include lovely, dazzling moments of fun and not just the daily cubicle grind. "When you view your life from a broader lens," Kivetz says, "there's a focus on feeling you'll miss out on the pleasures of life." Kivetz isn't suggesting you stop acting like a reasonable adult. But the next time you're wavering over whether to call in sick and join your friends on their impulsive three-day jaunt to Iceland, try this mind hack: Imagine yourself 10 years from now, looking back on your decision. What choice will make you feel happy then?" Iceland huh? :-) (Do they need an experiment to reach that conclusion? :-p )

Izzy Lane and the Unique Sheep Sanctuary of Scotland
    urbanlife
    by urbanlife  4-1-2008    4
Isobel Davies loves sheep - she created a Sheep Sanctuary in Scotland after she found that many sheep were sent to slaughter for various reasons from being male to being lame. She also discovered that farmers were burning the wool sheared from their sheep rather than selling it to manufacturers in other industries. Because 80 percent of the wool used in Britain’s clothing industry was imported, the native farmers couldn’t compete with the low prices—it would actually cost them more to properly shear and sell the wool than it would to just hack it off and burn it. Davies decided to create an economic model that would preserve the sheep AND support the British clothing industry. She created Izzy Lane Sheep-Friendly Clothing!

Bush: PIMP, Dictator, Hypocrite - Olbermann Transcript/Video

TRANSCRIPT: Olbermann challenges Bush on his MoveOn critique and more. "First off, it’s “Democrat-ic” party. You keep pretending you’re not a politician, so stop using words your party made up. Show a little respect. Secondly, you could say this seriously after the advertising/mugging of Senator Max Cleland? After the swift-boating of John Kerry? But most importantly, making that the last question? So that there was no chance at a follow-up? So nobody could point out, as Chris Matthews so incisively did, a week ago tonight, that you were the one who inappropriately interjected General Petraeus into the political dialogue of this nation in the first place! Deliberately, premeditatedly, and virtually without precedent, you shanghaied a military man as your personal spokesman and now you’re complaining about the outcome, and then running away from the microphone? Terrorizing your own people in hopes of getting them to vote for your own party has never brought as much as a publi

"even a casual glance at Corsi's lengthy endnotes reveals that his 'sources' include obscure Internet postings (which are themselves completely unsourced) and opinion columns from various conservative publications. In fact, on four occasions, Corsi cites himself as a source. Where Corsi does cite news sources, he sometimes presents only those that are consistent with his case while ignoring evidence that doesn't fit the picture he paints. "A comprehensive review of all the false claims in Corsi's book would itself be a book. Our review touches only on a few of the more blatant examples." See link for examples.
