Image files hold hidden data
MayTheClipBeWithYou
by MayTheClipBeWithYou  6-12-2007    2
Hidden data in JPEG/JPG images may say more about you than you intend. This useful article helps explain what types of metadata to look for and how to manage it. Discusses fingerprints of digital cameras and watermarking and also lists some *very* interesting cases where people have fallen foul of JPEG's metadata.

62,000 Bank of Scotland customers face ID theft
MayTheClipBeWithYou
by MayTheClipBeWithYou  6-6-2007
No mention of whether the data was encrypted or plain text. That such data is shipped by an apparently insecure method shows that BoS may not yet be taking ID theft and customer security seriously. **UPDATE** This article reports that the data was unencrypted: http://www.computerworlduk.com/management/security/data-control/news/index.cfm?newsid=3341 And this article reports the information was sent by standard, unsecured Royal Mail: http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/news/display.var.1443290.0.0.php BoS claimed it was "almost impossible" that any financial fraud could be committed with the limited information held on the disc, HOWEVER they omit to say that the information on the disc could be used in identity theft from its customers without impact to BoS.

Graves 'vandalised' by council for sake of safety
MayTheClipBeWithYou
by MayTheClipBeWithYou  5-17-2007
Local taxpayers must now fund the council's mistakes. That means less money for health and education. And all because a small number of people made such a bodge up of something that could have been done sensitively in the first place. It's hard to find a win in situations like these. Here's the council's official statement: http://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/content/news/general/3192619?a=0

Trial by Video For littering
eyelight
by eyelight  5-6-2007    1
People shouldn't drop litter. But this approach is to Big Brother. The next stage will be fining people on the premise that they might litter, or have littered. Surely it would make more sense for council workers to walk the streets with cleaning equipment rather than helmet-video-cameras, so that they can clear up the litter rather than film people allegedly dropping it.
