POPSAre We Alone in these Billions of Stars? The same question with a good answer. This is a good article that tries to explain the likelihood of extraterrestrial life. I believe. Not little green men ... but something else out there.

POPSJohhny Can't Write Have you looked at any young person's handwriting lately? I can barely read my 9 year old grandson's printing, and he is to start learning cursive this year. I doubt that this will be legible either. My great-uncle Lawrence had the most beautiful handwriting. It was all swirls and curls in beautifully, carefully written words. This has become a thing of the past. Too Bad!

POPSBeautiful Planet - Photos of Nature Photos in the clip: Uluru - Australia Monument Valley, Arizona, USA Pismo Beach, California, USA Columbia Gorge, Oregon, USA Great natural beauty photos site. Some of the photos are very large. I love the ones of the redwood forests in California. I remember going there as a young child. The trees are awesome. There are several albums of nature photos at this site. It's a good resource for nature photos.

POPSIs There Slavery In Your Chocolate? This clip is for abailart. This is another even worse example of the bottom line being the driving force behind inhumane treatment of the workers who produce the things we buy every day. This story broke back in 2001, and I'm glad to read that there has been some progress in addressing this atrocity. But as can be seen by this quote from the article there is still money talking in these decisions. "the U.S. chocolate industry and its allies mounted an intense lobbying effort to fight off legislation that would require "slave free" labels for their products." Unfortunately, Money Talks! Legislators have their hands tied by lobbyists and special interest groups. Sad!

POPSAmerica's Near-Poor - There But For Grace ... I see this a lot here in America. I may even be one of these people myself! One paycheck from welfare or becoming a "street person" with no home. Women are in more vulnerable to this than men. I recently spent the day with a homeless woman. I saw where she lived (in the woods behind a shopping center) I saw where she slept (in a sleeping bag on some plastic bags and newspaper) and I went to the grocery store with her to buy her meal for the day (after she had earned $3.00 answering some questions at a market research office ... where I met her). I took her to a county office to get 6 public bus coupons so she could get across town to pan-handle for money to continue paying for her small storage room where everything she owned was stored. There but for grace my friends!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_But_For_the_Grace_of_God_(Stargate_SG-1)

POPSLife on Mars Could be Hydrogen Peroxide Based I think if we keep looking we will eventually find life on Mars and other planets. If not, then I agree with Carl Sagan ... if humans were the only life in the universe it would "be a terrible waste of space".

POPSA Reason To Smile I have known a few "beautiful people" with horrid personalities ... or, they fake being nice. What I hate is when people get older and they stop seeing the fun and beauty in the world. Real "stick-in-the -mud" personalities, raining on everyone's parade. An interesting result for this study. So, beauty is as beauty does.

POPSWonder cancer herb found in Mabira forest reserve in Uganda
" The director for Research -Natural Chemotherapeutics Research Laboratory at the Ministry of health Grace Nambatya Kyeyune on Wednesday that the bark of the plant can also be used as an afrodisiac for men who suffer partial impotence. " It is also known to boost the human immune system and can be used as painkiller," Dr Nambatya said." "The high demand for the plant on the international market is threatening its existence in Africa and Uganda is lucky to have it even if it's in protected areas according to NFA." " Prunus africana is just one of the species of flora in Mabira central forests reserve, a medium altitude moist semi-deciduous forest and the biggest single natural forest block remaining in the central region of Uganda is endowed with." "Mr Mapesa revealed that, "Mabira central forest reserve also has wild robusta coffee, dioscoria tubers, yams and other plants whose economic importance is still under investigation and must therefore not be lost".

POPSTiny Creatures Rediscover the Joy of Sex This one's for righthand. I guess God does approve of sex. This tiny mite has redeveloped the ability to mate after their arachnid (spider) ancestors lost this ability. Most members of the species reproduce asexually (females having babies without a male partner). This makes these mini-mites one of a kind ... rediscovering sexual reproduction.

POPS"The Road to Hell" - Iraqi Refugees I vividly remember watching the Vietnamese employees and families of the American Embassy struggling and crying to get out of the country when the U.S. withdrew. The news videos and still photos were frightening and heartbreaking. http://www.fototime.com/34F181AC0E828BE/orig.jpg I see this is happening again ... in slow motion. Sad, but predictable.

POPSPhoto - New York City Blackout 1977 I remember this event. I also remember this was "back in the day" when America wasn't so concerned with our security (pre 9-11). The big news stories were how many people that were stuck in elevators and how many babies were born 9 months later. Times have changed!

POPSTake The Archaeology Quiz Fun quiz to find out how much you know about Archaeology. (I got all of them right because I love to read about archaeology and ancient history!)

POPSGreen Roofs - The Roof with Benefits What a really great idea! I believe these will be the roofs of the future ... if we want to preserve and enhance our environment and stop global warming. Read more about all of the benefits of this type of roofing on their web site. See more green roof photos (including a pic of the system from a side view) here: http://www.geekarmy.com/templates/links.php?id=2594

POPSEarth Mysteries - Ancient Sites and Landscapes Interesting site that investigates the things of earth that are revered or considered sacred. Stonehenge in particular, and the occurrence of ley lines through sacred sites in England and throughout the world is discussed.

POPSThursty Drunk Has Blood Chaser You never know what you might do when you're drunk. Mistaken identities are not that uncommon when you are in that kind of an impaired state. But Ewwwwwww!!!

POPSJohn Henry - Famous Thoroughbred Dies I love to watch horse racing. I think horses are one of the most beautiful creatures on earth. Riding horses has always been a wonderful experience that I didn't get to do as often as I would have liked.

POPSRevealing Photos Loosing Their Impact Don't get me started with censorship! If you don't like what you are seeing, close your eyes or turn away. If you don't like what's on TV or cable, change the channel! Beauty (or in this case obscenity) is in the eyes (and minds) of the beholder." 'Nuff said!

POPSGay Marriage - Accepted Tradition in the Past The more we investigate, the more we discover. Homosexuality is not something that just sprang up in the last century. It is documented all throughout history. I thought we were supposed to learn from the past?

POPSA Virus that makes you Fat! Well ... what else is new. It seems you can't eat, drink, talk on your cell phone, be intimate, or buy groceries without danger to your health ... so why not a "Fat" virus!?

POPSStephen Hawking - Bets on Black Hole Theory Even though this article is from 2004, I found it fascinating that Stephen Hawking would admit he might be wrong. You never see very many scientists admitting their original theories could be flawed. But like he said, "I've been thinking about this problem for the last 30 years, and I think I now have the answer to it."

POPSBoomers In Bad Shape? So ... are we "boomers" good or not? I am reading it both ways. I have always been healthy, and it says this is a good thing. I think people who smoke and drink to excess have problems of their own making. I personally think that health can also be a state of mind. If you moan and groan all the time and complain about little aches and pains you will feel bad more often than not. Interesting, if not slightly contradictory, findings.

POPSAdult Theme Movie Trailers - The Web Has It All If you don't want your kids to see things, keep them off the internet! That's about the whole name of the game with parental censorship. If it's out there, and available, it can be found on the web. And children sneaking into R-rated movies is nothing new. I'm sure my parents even saw things in movies "back in the day" that they weren't supposed to see or be exposed to. Where there's a will, there's a way!

POPSRussian Internet Advances Russia struggles again with bringing more modern services to those who want it. They are saying that "the decrease in the internet charges is to create favorable conditions for the electronic commerce development." Yes, it seems that 21st century business is depending on the internet and computers in general for business communication and applications. I personally was surprised to read of the charges for internet service in Russia being the same or comparable to American charges for service. Russia, in my lifetime, has been so closed and proprietary about their business, that it was a pleasure to read something about the costs of services for their people. Thanks again to epheme (new clipper as of yesterday) for introducing me to this source.
