2000 Year Old Human Brain Found
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  12-14-2008    2
It's hard to believe that the soft matter inside our brains could even survive for one year, once the body dies. But here it is, a 2000 year old severed human head with brain intact. If there will ever be a way to uncover the entire secrets of the Homo sapien evolution from its very beginnings to today's modern man, it will be through archaeological finds such as this. Isn't that exciting? Makes you a little bit annoyed at your mortality because it will be future generations who will be privy to such enlightenment. "Oh well, that's the way the cookie crumbles!" :-p That's the way the cookie crumbles. (British, American & Australian, informal, American, informal) Something that you say which means that bad things sometimes happen and there is nothing you can do to prevent it, so it is not worth becoming upset about it. i.e. A:" Well, I asked Cindy out, and she told me to swallow my head . . " B:"Hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles!" From: http://www.urbandictionary.com

Feel Like Getting In Touch with Your Feminine Side?

I don’t know whether to take this seriously or not. It has a very SciFi feel to it. I can’t say that I have heard of stranger things happening but with all the chemicals we are exposed to every day of our lives I suppose a certain combination of them could trigger this. Still, I don’t know. I’d have to see a separate study come to the same conclusion before I believe it.

Google's Secret Weapon: MapReduce
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  12-13-2008    2
As the inventors of MapReduce noted in a recent paper, "It has been used across a wide range of domains within Google including: large-scale machine learning problems; clustering problems...; extracting data to produce reports of popular queries; extracting properties of Web pages for new experiments and products...; processing of satellite imagery data; language model processing for statistical machine translation, and; large-scale graph computation." Or in other words, the tasks Google performs are similar to the functions performed by the brain: learning, categorization, vision and language.

Feeding Pets of the Homeless – help somebody who's down & out take care of their best friend
Lexica
by Lexica  12-12-2008    1
It doesn't surprise me that many pet owners choose to stay homeless longer rather than give up their animals. If somebody told me that I had to choose between a roof over my head and my beloved cat… well, I've got a Therm-a-rest camping mattress and a good sleeping bag, we'd just need a tarp and a harness & leash for Nemo.

Animals don't care if you're smart, or handsome, or rich, or funny, or talented. They care if you feed them and if you're good to them. And if you are, they will stick by you through your darkest times. As the bumper sticker says, "Lord, help me become the person my dog thinks I am." *sniff* 'Scuse me. After reading this story, I seem to have something in my eye...
