Against Religion:

AC Grayling contributes a simple and well–written but deep (as usual) article, this one at last speaking out against the claim that any particular religion merits special attention or privileges. Highlights:

Zoroastrianism & Islam
Kodanshi
by Kodanshi  1-9-2008    1
This made me sit up and take notice. One of the more hellish Islamic tales that did the rounds while I grew up featured the person having to cross a razor–sharp bridge. Of course, a true mu’min (believer) would cross it safely. The kafir would plunge to their doom into eternal Hell. Now I see it, like quite a few elements, could possibly come from Zoroastrianism. I must look into this further…

American Prophets and the Efficacy of Prayer
Kodanshi
by Kodanshi  6-8-2007    1
It turns out that despite widespread atheism and agnosticism, people still do believe in the powers of petitioning God with prayer, and that God would act on the behalf of people in a war. Behold:

Hmmm… An interesting article I happed upon gives a preview on a play which will run from the 24th–26th of this month (April 2007) and promises a different take on the whole ‘boy meets girl’ routine. I can’t imagine how it might play out: 12 separate sections of 3 minutes each, interspersed with a minute’s worth of soliloquy? I wish I could afford to attend…

Shahadah from a Jewish Perspective
Kodanshi
by Kodanshi  4-22-2007
The Muslim declaration of faith (Shahadah = testimony, and from the same root as ‘shaheed’ which you can roughly translate as ‘martyr’) runs thus: “There is no divinity but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”. At one time I used to wonder about this — question why we took the name of the Prophet alongside that of God. Why, if we submitted to God, did we have to declare our allegiance to a man chosen by God to spread the word? Eventually I came to accept this as the best summation of our religion of Islam. We submitted wholly to Allah in the latest format as preached by Muhammad. It made sense to me. Then I read this and some of the old thoughts (…and doubts) came flooding back:

“Muslims proud to be British”
Kodanshi
by Kodanshi  5-2-2007
Interesting. A recent Gallup poll has shown that muslims in London feel far more integrated than a lot of the ‘native’ population! Done, unfortunately, on a rather small cross–section of the population, nonetheless it shows great hope — and definitely smashes a lot of the talk on muslims unwilling to integrate with Britain…
— end of the list —
