Stewart to Huckabee: At What Age Did You Choose Not To Be Gay?
    Jorjor
    by Jorjor  12-14-2008    15
For over seven minutes last night, Jon Stewart grilled former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee on his opposition to gay marriage. Huckabee is touring the country to promote his new book, "Do The Right Thing." When Stewart compared gay marriage bans to interracial marriage bans, Huckabee restated his view that homosexuality is simply a behavior choice:

    "Happy Holidays" = Mortgage Meltdown

    by Jorjor  11-25-2008    1
I read this article several times, and still can't figure out the writer's logic. He does, of course, raise the old canard about not being able to have morality without religion (or a particular religion) but how he gets across this big non sequitur is beyond me. Also from the source: "Responsibility and restraint are moral sentiments. Remorse is a product of conscience. None of these grow on trees. Each must be learned, taught, passed down. And so we come back to the disappearance of Merry Christmas...Northerners and atheists who vilify Southern evangelicals are throwing out nurturers of useful virtue with the bathwater of obnoxious political opinions. The point for a healthy society of commerce and politics is not that religion saves, but that it keeps most of the players inside the chalk lines. We are erasing the chalk lines." He seems to be saying that religion doesn't save but without it we are doomed. By citing Christmas, he is narrowing it down to one religion.

Why Too Much Praying Is A Bad idea
    Jorjor
    by Jorjor  8-11-2008    7
It seems to me that a lot of praying, instead of achieving its intended purpose of praise and glorification instead reduces a deity to a petty servant. Internet evangelist Stuart Shepard issued a call to pray that Barack Obama's planned speech in a stadium in Denver gets rained out. That goes beyond petty into the realm of the ridiculous and juvenile.

Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist Get Slammed!
    Jorjor
    by Jorjor  11-1-2007    3
It's about time this bastard got some comeuppance! Phelps takes homophobia to extremes. It's one thing to disapprove of or publicly denounce homosexuality, but Phelps and his family blame gays for everything from the decline of western civilization to yesterday's heartburn. I can think of no better example of religion perverted by hate. This is a real test in my belief in Voltaire’s quote, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”. At times like this, I prefer Tom Stoppard’s version: “I agree with everything you say, but I would attack to the death your right to say it.” In this case, it’s probably best to let Phelps et. al. continue to show the world what asses they are. I can’t imagine any reasonable person, left, right, conservative or liberal, agreeing with Westboro Baptist’s brand of venom. In case you're not familiar with the Phelps clan, check out some of the links in the clip.

Not So Fast, Christian Soldiers - War or Crusade?
    Jorjor
    by Jorjor  8-29-2007    3
Have you ever noticed that almost all religious wars involve monotheistic religions? I have looked and cannot come up with an instance when one polytheistic culture waged religious war against another polytheistic culture. There's always a monotheist involvement - maybe that's because with only one god, the monos think they have more to lose. Read the clip source and the original article
